Hi Guys:
I was thinking about trying to organize a Get Together in England in the Spring (April,May, June maybe) just wondered who would be interested? I thought we could maybe make a weekend of it somewhere quite central and have some competions, swap and trade things. Who's Interested? Once I get a rough idea of numbers I can look for a suitable location.

                                      Thanks J41

This has come up many times, but the problem is that since this is an international forum, people like me may have a hard time coming Wink

This should probably get moved to another board Wink

Nice idea. Rather than arrange something, as Mr. Bones says, just meet up at an airshow. Quite a few members go to Duxford and RIAT.

Flying Legends Air Show - Saturday 10 & Sunday 11 July

I think an airshow would be impractical. What with traffic problems & crowds inside the actual airfield you might never meet. This would be almost impossible at my local show let alone somewhere like Duxford. It might be better to arrange a visit on a non-show day to Duxford or another museum. Then you could all meet up in the car park at a pre-arranged time. Just a suggestion.

PS. Don't forget the Farnborough Air Show is on this year.

Another idea - is, using the airshow, but, people bring CB (handheld/walkie talkie) radios, and choose a channel before hand. That way, you can mention a "code-word" that is pre-arranged that everyone knows about, then, whoever knows about it, can start chattin. Airshows, typically, would be difficult to meet at, as there are many people, and, most airports are rather large.

Or I could wear an overcoat with a red carnation, carry an umbrella and the Times paper.

The code word will be "Sheep retreat when they hear Fozzer coming"

And the reply "If Ozzy flew any lower he'd be chatting with Satan"

I'll be under the clock at St Pancras station......

I dont know why it seems such a problem, meeting at duxford or any airshow shouldnt be too hard just state where and when, for that matter if you wanted to go the whole hog why not contact somoen at Duxford. they might be willing to let you put up a sign, possibly even sponsor a gathering.  You might want to put this Idea up to some of the major movers and shakers in the community that reside in britain, Mike Clarke comes to mind, how about the Alpha sim guys?
I'd be interested in showing up. I may be in the UK at the right time.

I can't speak for J41 but I got the impression this would be a get-together for members of this forum. People we know as friends. The main problem would be recognising each other as we've never met in real life. From my own experiences at air displays, even small ones, it's very difficult to meet people you know well & you could waste a lot of time looking for them rather than watching the show. I've done this myself at Farnborough on a trade day when there are far less people there than on public days. Missed half the display & never did meet my friend although he was doing exactly the same thing looking for me. Roll Eyes

Of course, you could all use Will's suggestion. Wink

PS. A few months ago I did a job as a courier for my old company. I took a small, urgently required item to CDG Paris & arranged to meet an airline rep in the terminal to hand him the package. Although we were both at the airport & talking to each other via mobile phone it was something like 45 minutes before we finally met up. Roll Eyes

As for Brad's suggestion of walkie-talkie radio or mobile phones, these are not encouraged at air displays for obvious reasons.

Hawker Tempest knows Duxford better than anyone here so I would take his advice.

From bitter experience I would never go there again on a display day. Despite having priceless advance tickets we were not allowed off the nearby M11 motorway onto the road running past the airfield as it was already full before we arrived. This was even more frustrating as you can see the airfield clearly from the motorway. Roll Eyes
All we got for 12 hours on the road was a glimpse of a Spitfire taking off over our heads. I arrived home exhausted & disappointed. This might have been a rare & unfortunate cock-up on the part of the organisers but it put me off the idea for life.

I visited Duxford on a Sunday in November.  It was cold, wet and windy.  Nothing special happening but we had to park in the Officers mess and walk a mile(ish) to get in.  There must have been thousands of people there.

I met Ozzy in central London and it was way easier to find him than it would've been in Duxford...

This might be a much better idea. Easier for most people to get to & not so dependent on the weather. Wink

Wow Hagar,
things must have really changed, I never had any trouble getting in to an airshow at Duxford, but I always got there before the gates opened. and it has been 10 years since the last time I was there.
a shame, as I remember my last show there it would have been easy to meet up by picking a place and time.

I always try and arrived by 0830-0930 latest. Nowadays you have to approach from the south M11 to get to park on the airfield anyway.

I should point out that this was a special event. The Spitfire 60th Anniversary show. 1998 I believe - was it really that long ago?
Apparently it was far more popular than the organisers expected or catered for. The car park was full to capacity long before we got there & the M11 was jammed solid for miles with people trying to get in. We ended up in Cambridge about 1 hour after passing the airfield before we could turn round & go home again.

It was a very disappointing day for me as I had special complimentary tickets from the OFMC. Despite this the police would not let us off the M11. There was no way we could have got through anyway.

I know the show Hagar is talking about. I got into the airfield as the gates opened at 8am. Same thing happened at the 2000 B of B airshow at Duxford. Site was full and people had to be turned away.
In my experience this is a bit unusual at Duxford as the crowd is normally well under capacity.
However, Hagar may well be correct about finding each other at a crowded airshow and Hendon is most likely the better option.

I think this is intended more as a small informal get-together. What Avsim do is neither here nor there & up to them. Wink

The other benefit of a non airshow site is that the weather wouldnt really be able to put a "damper" on the meeting if the British weather was to be as it normally is... Undecided

I won't be coming. You guys wouldn't want an old codger like me around.

May I add a word of caution. I don't know how old you are but don't arrange full details on this forum. You never know who's watching. Even then, please be careful who you agree to meet up with.

I am going to Duxford on a flight day if i see and recognise anyone it would be nice, if i don't... well there's no loss.

The only way we can easily meet is on an online flight.  The problem is the limit of 8 people.  I hate that limit, is there any way of getting rid of that.

I think it's better to create a scenery addon with lots of goodies and eye-candy and have an on-line get-together over there. Smiley

All we need is to create it, upload it, download it, and install it.

That way, we can all meet each other in our favorite aircraft.

Ozzy pulling his insane stunts over our heads and violating all the rules of the FAA and NTSB, Hagar driving his tanks all around and leaving tred marks on the runways and violating UN regulations, me driving around my Porsche and racing any aircraft and breaking every speed limit, Hellhound flying his armored blimp and laying seige on the city, Silent Exploder coming in dressed up in his flyable space suit shouting out "Too infinity and beyond" [in German Grin ], and the list goes on. Grin

LOMFAO

It be really nice to pic a place in the virtual world of FS and meeting there online. Wink
