i have recently purchased my new  XFX nvidia FX5950 ultra http://prices.cclcomputers.co.uk/specs/VGA/XFX/5950/spec.htm and in the process of overlcocking it ( shh i know what im doing etc ) but instead of manualy overclocking it i use the coolbits program with the drivers which has a handy Auto detect button....from what i can gather from this the drivers actauly overclock the card for you

lets see the stock of the card is 475 mhz clock and 950 mhz memory clock << pretty darn impressive but check out the overclocking i have got after testing with the auto detect button:

core clock up to 600 MHZ!!!!
memory clock to an unbelievable 1.12 ghz!!!!

i have a total of 7 fans in my PC excluding CPU fan and GPU fan so im sure they can handle the heat (2 extraction fans in the pci slots below the card and a further 2 blowing over the card aswell as the gpu fan. i also have 2 blowing from the bottom at the front of my case and one from the case side near this beast.

am i being misleaded by this auto detect or is it a good thing? i am worried to put the card under load at them speeds incase i damage it but if it handles it fine then rock on!!!!

anyone else had experience with this?

thanx , daz

Daz,

Beware mate, I've found if you O/Clock an FX card, the cooling fan has a habit of turning itself off! - Mine did!

I'd strongly advise you remove the Nvidia GPU cooler and replace it with one powered from your pc's PSU directly (which I have) then o'clock at will!

or get a liquid cooling system with a CPU and GPU block, that would be perfect, of course they take more work to take care of than air

Still have a nice PC but I just switched to a hella nice mac

DON"T DO IT!!!!

Don't trust that 'auto detect' button. if you want to fry your card go ahead. I suggest raising the clock speeds by 5 or 10 at a time.. run 3dmark03 and see if it runs ok.. raise a little again.. run 3dmark... and keep doing that until you start to get worse performance or see glitches on the screen. Then back it down a little and leave it their.
