Hey all, I'm running AOL8.0 on XP and my problem is that whenever I do a right click on a file from a web-site onto my computer the only options I get are *.art, and *.bmp.  I don't have a probram that will open art files except Internet explorer, and the bitmaps will not open because it isn't the right file type...(So says the error message I get).

I know several other people running identical systems and software who are able to do this easily, so If someone can tell me what to change in my settings I would appreciate it!

You should be able to open the bmp file.. Bmp is standard.. Jpeg is to bmp as mp3 is to wav.

It might just be set to use the wrong program to open it with. Save the file to your desktop.. then right-click on it.. click on 'open with..'.. then choose mspaint.. (if you are using windows...) Or whatever program you think should be able to open it.

hope this helps.

Jared. Take my tip. Sign on with the useless AOL browser. (Use that for e-mail only.) Then fire up Internet Explorer & use that for browsing. Problem solved. Wink

PS. M$ Paint should open BMP files.

Yeah, if you are using that aol browser then don't!! That's one thing I hate about AOL.. even if you don't use their browser you still have to have it open to be connected to the net. Just because AOL say they are the greatest doesn't mean they are... You can get dsl or cable internet for the price of AOL and don't have to deal with that damn browser!

Thanks for the info, and for all who suggested the MSpaint for opening the bitmaps, I tried everything! Including Mspaint, which seemed very strange to say the least.  Using IE6 today I was able to save a picture in several different formats and open them all.

Thank you all for the information!

Frankly, I don't like AOL. I have heard so many stories of killing computers ( Grin), that I really don't want to try. You can sort the picture problem out once and for all by going to the File Types section. Set the program you want to be associated with each file, and then delete and other associations.

Hope this maybe gave you a little more info, though it probably didn't help Grin

I'm not sure that that will work, I could also go in and tell it to open with any picture program that I had, and non would open it...I don't know...hopefully in a few months here, I will be able to switch to a better provider.

I quit using AOL because there was a much cheaper ISP locally, and besides that, I would sign on using AOL and immediatly log on to MSN explorer which is free.
I don't remember having any problems with AOL, I just switched to save some cash.

Yeah, I usually haven't run aol for anything but an internet connection, and sometimes for web-browsing...

still hope to upgrade to something better soon...
