Sounds like a good idea to me.  But, in the past different colored stars have ment an authority on the board (green for mods and red for pete).  So, maybe they could be filled in or something.

I don't know anything about Yabb or how it works, but is it impossible to change the star thing entirely?  What I mean is, instead of having the cap be at Resident with 5 stars, maybe after 2000 you could from 5 stars to one triangle, or an airplane, or something....then two airplanes, then three...

Just a thought.  It may not even be possible.  lol

How about we have stripes, then stars.  Finally we could have crowns or eagles depending on nationality.  We could force members to address more senior members as Sir or Maam. Sad

Please note immense sarcasm involved in this post.

Pete, I have an idea for the Stars thing.....not really too different, but maybe workable to 5000 ?.....I have the single stars if you are interested, in the same 16x16 pixel size as the ones under your name. This image was done only to show the run of numbers ........its ten times what we all have now, and I know it will leave the top open, but actually how many will go up to those lofty heights besides guys like  Andrew, Mark, Hagar and B'Man .....well a few more, but in any event, my idea can be modified if you think that a cap of 5000 still needs to be upped........

I can't believe that you guys are taking this so seriously!  Did we change into a military unit last night whilst I was asleep?

We know who each other are and on whom we can rely for advice.  Every so often a new member comes along and sticks around, the vast majority who don't rarely get beyond two stars.  When they stick around we get to know them and either decide that they are worth responding to or not.  A "Valued Member" who is an annoying little brat does not evolve into a nice person after 51 posts of pure drivel.

The current system IMHO is perfect.  It takes a fair amount of effort to turn up here and post 500 reply's.  You don't know anyone and may not know that much about FS.  By the time you hit 501 posts you have developed a fairly good relationship with the regulars and chatting becomes more natural.

Leave things as they are, please!!!  There are certain members who feel that they have a right to talk down to and be abusive to new members on the grounds that they have hit the "post" button more often.  I do NOT wish to find myself in a situation where simply because I have a mere 1400 posts I have to swallow my tongue and be polite to an idiot who has 1800 posts.   These are just examples I'm not implying in anyway that this would happen, I'm just saying that a more complicated "rank" structure would encourage it.

The only person on here who automatically gets respect is Pete, the rest of us have to prove ourselves with the quality of posts we make, not by writing LOL as a reply on all 1208 threads on the Joke forum.

For those that are so concerned about their "Seniority" in the forum, add the date you registered to your signature....

The intention of my setup wasn't to change anything on the Star situation, on the contrary, I have left the first five stars intact, but added in an allowance for recognition of the 1000s and additional 500s......thats all, and since each star is a  single image,  then it will reduce the graphic load by HUGE amounts in the future when Andrew hits 50 million posts and we need to find another colour which will signify his lofty perch..... Roll Eyes  Roll Eyes Wink  Grin

In all fairness though, I think as this year winds down, we may find that either Mark or Scott, is going to push past B'man and Andrew to take over supreme commander of all "Star" forces on the west side of our posting area !

That was aimed at no-one in particular but I have noticed that on occasion people have been referred to in the manner "hey, newbie" when they disagree with a point of view.  If back in February I had been greeted with this attitude I would have left in seconds.

My major issue is that this is a public forum and each members opinion holds equal weight with each other members opinion.  Andrews thoughts don't carry 7 times more weight than mine and neither do Ozzy's carry five times more weight.

Also by use of forum names we don't really know who anybody actually is.  Take Leonr in the CFS3 Forum, he has a grand total of 7 posts to his credit and is thus a "newbie" to the forum.  The fact that he is a member of the CFS development team adds a certain influence to his comments.

Finally a militaristic ranking system puts me off, the stars are not ranks they are a guage of posting frequency.  You can post tons of spam messages and get stars quickly, or you can sit back and only open your mouth occasionaly and take your time.

IMHO by the time you have hit 500 the regulars know who you are and will have developed a certain relationship with you.  I don't need stars under my name to prove anything, all I need to know is that there are about thirty+ people out there who I can scream for help to and be guarenteed an answer within twelve hours.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I do feel that those who contribute the most do deserve some kind of recognition.  That does not give them the right to 'Lord it over anyone' as my grand mother would say.  No, they don't have the right to talk down to people or act like they're better.  But I think that if someone hangs out here for a couple of years and posts as much as some of the regulars do then a bit of a thank you is in order.  I wasn't trying to make any military style ranks, I was trying to extend the current system of stars.  I even took my stars from the current ones, except for the last.  Even now, it is not a military theme to the rankings, but a relaxed casual one.

Once again,  if anyone is out there treating members badly,  PLEASE REPORT IT TO A MOD OR PETE!

Is it possible to have stars for the amount of time here at SimV, but still have a personal/private post counter in their profile?

That way people wouldn't be secretely competing with each other. Wink

I think it would still boil down to a competition. 'I've been here longest' and such...

I don't understand why everyone thinks this thing has to be a competition.  It's NOT about who posts the most.  It's about recognition for people who care to contribute.  To be honest, I think I see more people bitching about people 'pulling rank' than I see people doing the offense.  More people complain about what it means than people who try to 'use' it.

Just relax and don't make such a big deal of it!

Not much more then now IMO

With the post counter, you can theoretically spam the forums and boost your counter.

But I kinda agree with Doug, but just hide it from the public.

Just to play "Devil's Advocate", the number of stars displayed by someone responding to a particular subject, does hold weight(for me)on topics specific to SIMV. The reasons for this would be obvious. I don't think the system needs to be changed at all, but I wouldn't remove it altogether either Ken. Quote:

I wasn't suggesting you turn this place into GESTAPOVIATION, I just thought if you were going to make a change why not something inline with military insignia, just for nostalgia sake. Roll Eyes
In retrospect, I can see how this could create a problem with "badge collectors". Angry   I DO think it would be nice if the member had their basic credentials or strongpoints posted ie; software engineer, former United Captain, Active CFI, Aerospace Engineer, former floorsweeper at the Skunkworks etc. etc. etc........

with the way this has gone now, I wish I hadn't given any thought as to how we could add in a bit more colour for the members.......for me, it has nothing to do with ranking and nothing to do with how smart one is, compared to anything else......its just a way of showing a number with a coloured graphic......many members won't see the changes which the bigger numbers represent, as they only will make changes every 500 posts.....so big deal....I would like to see two blue and one red star for my 2500+ posts, instead of the constant 5 yel/wht stars which we now display, but thats just my personal feeling......

Some people like to have the same desktop wallpaper on all the time and some change it weekly......for me the addition of red and blue stars is only a small way to keep a splash of colour and a bit of change in the look of my posting area.......

I'm not comparing the "star system" to someone's tenure or background OR intelligence, and you really don't have to be a rocket scientist to answer many of the questions on the forum.         But.........
Just take a look at some of the post history around here. Seems like a lot of "who are you?, where do you come from? what do you do?" My suggestion was not a intended as a replacement or enhancement of the current system, but as a "on a similar note...." idea.  Smiley

I've resurrected my old nickname to illustrate a point. On this basis you would take more notice of Hagar or Grumpy1 than me. Roll Eyes

Most of the regulars know that we are one & the same person. When asking for help or advice, surely the content of the reply must mean more than the number af posts the author might have? I can usually tell if a person knows what they're talking about & couldn't care less how many stars they have. Anyone can give specific information about themselves in their avatar & signature if they wish to do so.

Like Andrew, Fozzer & a few others I was here long before this board (Ultraboard RIP) & helped Pete check it out on the first day. As Hagar I tend to spend more time in the sim & design forums where people come for help & advice. This was originally the intention of this forum. I've seen the occasional valuable contributions by developers I admire, experts in their field like Dave Eckert, Lee Swordy & Garry J. Smith. I've learned so much from guys like them but all have only one star in this forum. I suspect they & others like them would visit more often if it wasn't for this stupid obsession with number of postings & star ratings. This is one of the reasons for my objection to the whole idea. It's bad enough already, extending it can only make things worse. IMHO

I brought this Idea up only for change not "status"I beleive also , that its not the stars that tell who knows what INFO, and  who doe's not know alot of info.. ..I also agree we get to know who ubderstands what in here by time and as we talk to different peoplenot by the stars they get..
I really am sorry that I brought this up..

I think that Doug_A (alias Hagar....alias Grumpy1-lol) has made an extremely good point.  Sure, all these stars and whatnot are fun and intertaining...but what to they really mean, nothing.  I think that sometimes people tend to listen more to people with 5 stars than those with 1 or 2.  Doug made a great point here, but what one thing he didn't say bluntly, I'll say bluntly.  Look at all us residents, we have 5 stars...yay-but do any of us make a more valuable contribution than someone with 2 stars (ya know, people like this "Doug_A" character with only 60 posts!  Wink).  OK, I do understand that these stars are fun to have and I suppose that we have "earned" them, but I don't think it is neccessary to make more "distance" between people with a lot of posts and people with few.

Since this seems to be missed as a simple point, let me say this....

.........all that the stars signify is whether the member is a long running contributor(whether garbage or not in value isn't of mention) or whether the member is more of a spectator, and reads to his hearts content........end of story.......
.......nowhere,  is anyone defined as being more valuable than anyone else, as in the end we all take what we want from the forums and we all submit what we want to contribute...........

personally, if I want more stars I will make my own avatar full of stars.......hmmmmmmmm

Just taking a moment to reflect........Let's seeeee......Resident.....Resident......Resident.......GoldMember+........Residen
t........Resident.........Resident.......Goldmember+.......Resident.......Reside
nt disguised as Gold member.....Resident.............I feel like a Private that just made a wrong turn into the General's War Room. Your point and delivery are well appreciated Doug, but that wasn't the only point I made.

Pat. I wasn't criticising or trying to pull rank. I quoted part of your reply to make my own point. I didn't think it necessary to quote the complete thing or comment on it. It's always surprised me just how seriously some people take this rank business, that's all.

I'm an old misery guts & never saw the point of changing anything simply for the sake of it. I have better things to think about than the number of stars anyone has or what colour they might be. I'm sure Pete has far more important stuff to worry him too.
These are simply my opinions & I don't expect too many people to agree with me. LOL  Wink

I agree, and the point you were making was perfectly illustrated(I didn't even regard the number of Stars(AT FIRST GLANCE)). Which, now as I type this really brings out another point. Most of the time I just read the text, and then if I find the response funny, or interesting, or questionable, I may sctutinize the author more closely. With the exception being Fozzer, I can always spot his handywork! Cheesy Ultimately going back to where I started, I never had any complaints about the existing system, and your probably right, efforts concentrated on more important items would be better spent. It took me two weeks to figure out how to change my Avitar, I can't even imagine what an undertaking it must be to maintain and modify this entire site!  Embarrassed     Pat Wink

This whole thread is not about shooting down someones idea.  It is a free and frank exchange of views.  Some people think it is a great idea, others don't.  All who have an opinion have posted it and we are all still friends.  Why resurrect the thread and imply that residents are ganging up on newer members?

Why oh why is this such an issue?

My view - the server simply logs the number of posts, for some other daft/stupid/logical (delete as applicable) reason.

I could'nt give a hoot how many stars a poster may have, theres more than a few in here who simply post for the sake of it - "it" being the number of posts.... Roll Eyes

If somebody wants to give me green stars animated images etc for posting then thats fine by me.

If on the other hand, I did'nt know how many posts I'd ever made, I doubt the experience of these forums would change for me at all.

All I've done today is use my Battlefield1942 "name".

Otherwise, there'd be a truck reference in this post somewhere of other............ Wink

Considering that, except for the last three postings, no one had touched this thread for almost a month; I wouldn't consider it an issue.  It was a subject that came up, was debated, and eventually petered out.  Why make a big deal of it now?  Kiss

Simple Pippin.

Some of us are not on-line at home etc etc and thus, may only get patchy internet access.

I'm in this camp. I only visit here when I'm at a friends house or using a pc at work.
I work away from home most of the time and some weekends I won't go near a PC and thus no where near the net or SimV for upto months at a time, depending where in the U.K. or europe I may be....  Sad

Thus, if I see a topic that interests me (and it may be months old) I'll add to it, ok, it may get bumped up the board temporarily, but, if indeed it's already old and petered out I'm sure it'll die down again. This thread is the biggest on the page at the moment (42 posts I think) - hardly surprising, somebody like me comes along after some period of absence and reads, then replys to the hottest thread!

This forum to my knowledge has'nt got any rules on replying to old posts, and it would be rather sad if it did IMHO.

Or am I just wrong  ???

Aww its nice to know I'm missed!

Alas, I'm still off-line at home, thus rather patchy in my 'net access.......

Things are changing, I'll be back soon, but I'd actually say I never really left.....

I've been popping up here 'n' there, most had'nt noticed I thought.....  Wink

Theres always the private message facility on this forum if any menbers want to contact somebody directly.....

One way I can always be contacted, regardless of me being on the net at home or not is my hotmail......

I hope I am not being out of line here.  I know I am new to these forums and not very knowledgeable in it subtle ways.  I sometimes use the star system to judge the merits of a persons response in areas where my own expertise are very limited.  The longer I am tolerated here the more I learn, yet I would still find it helpful if there were some way to judge what imformation you can trust and what is little more than well intentioned guesswork.

to a certain extent Fido, i used that for a while when i first started posting and it usually is true, the more stars the more experience.  But dont treat that like gospel, a lot of my post have been jokes which dont really advance the simv. world.  so it can be decieving.
