This is a real stupid question......What is the rule of thumb of flight level to length (in NM) of the route. I know the flight levels are odd or even due to the heading but what's the average altitude for certain ranges? I think that makes sense.............I'm making this inquiry for AI flight plans.

Hey xmit

Don't forget that most AI flighgt plans do not work properly if you use real life alts. Mostly you will end up with overflying problems at the destination meaning real life alts are too high for AI. This is one of the commonest problems people have

eg

From LHR to JFK real life is something like FL360

Depending on yr aircraft my experience is that does not work. Have to use something like FL200 max (I'm not at my PC so I can't check my actual numbers for you)

Advice is experiment and use the max alt that gives an arrival and landing at destination. Max alt will be lower than real life and prob lower than you would expect
