Yes, you can overclock Geforce2 cards, however, it really depends on which card you have......

For example, I have a 64MB Geforce2 MX-400, its possibl to overclock it by about 5>10% however, I notice no improvement when I do this, in fact, I'd say I get more graphical glitches than I would running it at its standard speed.....

Post what specs your card & system are, I'll have a better idea then if your overall package would benefit or not from some 'clocking here & there.......

Paul.

Well, yes! the card's certainly the part thats holding your machine back.....

Invest in a Geforce3 ti or a Geforce4 ti (NOT the "MX") and your system will be vastly improved.

IMHO, 256MB RAM should be fine, 512MB better still! Wink one word of warning though, don't exceed 512MB RAM with Windows 98, 512MB is the max this O/S can handle.

Hope this helps. Smiley

well, the thing is that i have no money
and a stubborn father whos bent on not
giving me any large amount of money (7 dollers per week Angry)

the ti costs about 400 dollars, so by the time i get the money, the geforce 6 will be out Sad
this is why i wanna see if i can overcklock it

im running on XP, and my dad said he was considering buying some RAM (about a gig), which now costs about 550 USD (his reason is that ram lasts longer than a video card [marketwise] and itll be more useful for future applications)

one question tough:
if i have rambish ram (pc8100)
do i have to buy two sticks and
but them together to be
able to use the ram?
i know im not explaining
my self very well so heres an example:

if i want 512 mb, then i have to buy 2 256 mb sticks
if i want 1024, then i need 2 sticks of 512 MB
if i want 2048, then ill need 4 sticks of 512 mb
is this true?

Hmm, I think your fathers spending money on the wrong item here!

You won't see anything like the performance return from a $550 investment in RAM compared to say $400 spent on a Geforce4ti period.

As for overclocking your MX graphics card, try it and you'll probably fry it! as I already said, these cards will overclock a little, 5>10% but you really won't see any noticeable improvement.

I feel 256MB RAM would be just fine for your system, as long as you have the right 3D card to go with it - Which a Geforce2 MX (overclocked or not) is not the right card.

My Brother in law has a similar system to you, (built by me!)
P4 1.8ghz, 512MB DDR RAM, Geforce4 ti 4600.
Recently, one of his 256MB RAM sticks went faulty, so, I removed it so I could return it to the store.....
Guess what? The above system with half of its previous RAM still managed to comfortably average 50+ fps running CFS2 , 1280x1024 32Bit, with Sliders Maxed. Shocked Once I'd relpaced the RAM, I got the same results.....

Thus, I'd say RAM isn't the issue, the 3D Card most certainly is.
Marketwise, the Geforce4 ti is about as future proof as your likely to get.
I'd keep your existing 256MB, buy a newer, better 3D card then come back & tell me how happy you are (and will be) with it!

Hope this makes some kind of sence......  ???  Roll Eyes

the reason for my dad buying ram
is that he wants this computer
to last applicatoin wise
he doesnt care about my games
why should he?

last year we had a 133mhz P1 (we had bought it in 1996!) until he decided to buy one in november
he thinks hell have this pc for another 6 years

he will not buy me a video card though,
i already asked him. we had the optoin
to buy a gf 3 ti when we bought the pc
for a little extra but he didnt want it

im sure i will be happy with any new video card i get cause this one sux
ill have to get a job during the summer,
because i have nowhere near $400.
ill have to get it secretly, my dad
probably wouldnt approve of me
spending that much money either!

ps- you wouldnt happen to have stuff laying around the house that you dont want which might be useful to me would you? Grin

Sup guys.

Right now, I own an 8mb Trident Blade 3D MVP4 Video card (I know, it sucks more than the GF MX, 100x more). I only have roughly 120 US dollars on my wallet right now. I earned this money through volunteer work: 10 dollars per hour.

I am wondering( with 256mb ram, 20x CD-ROM drive, p3 with 800mhz, win98, 11.7 gb hard drive[4 being used], all in a Compaq) which card should I buy? At best buy, they sell a Radeon with 64mb at about $99 or so and a GF2 with 64mb at about $170 (-/+ $10). Which is my best bet?

I know, I must avoid the one that says MX on it.

PS: resources are currently at 78% free.

erm no it isnt lol. my  xfx gf4 ti4200 128mb whips the pants of a ti4600 (overclocked of course) at a reasonable price of $174.

note that the stock geforce 4 ti4200 64mb is clocked at 250 core clock and 550 memory clock....higher than the geforce 4 ti4400 and  pretty darn impressive until you consider what the 128mb version can handle

i have mine at 360mhz core clock and 720mhz memory clock.

this card listed above has higher performance than many other new cards including the fx5200 and the fx5600. can match the ati9600 and the 9500 on performance

Ok, You want to "Upgrade" ok, that means future i.e. direct x 9 hardware support.
The GF4ti's are Direct X 8 Cards, GF4 MX's are Direct X 7 Graphics cards.
GF FX's are Direct X 9 Cards, and thus, in the future will out perform the earlier yet faster GF4ti's when running DX9 applications.

Thus, to upgrade, frankly I think you'd be a little silly upgrading to a card thats already out of date!

Another thing, GF4ti's are considerably slower than the FX's with anti-alaising and anisiotropic filtering enabled. You should consider this is image sharpness is your thing.. (High quality screenshots etc)
If however, you arn't fussed about DX9 or AA etc, then I'd still happily say go for the ti4600/4800 but don't come to me bitching about Doom III, Half-Life II etc etc etc  Kiss
You pays yer money, you takes yer choice. Wink
