I've been using a Saitek X45 for years. Really nice to use, works well with all a/c and can be obtained cheap on Ebay. Saw one recently for $6 bucks. I'd like a Saitek X52 but they're a lot more money.

I've been using a Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog (
http://www.thrustmaster.com/en_UK/products/hotas-warthog
). It is one expensive hardware set, but the thing is a monster! It also requires that you spend (a good amount of) time configuring it via its TARGET software, but that gives you flexibility - a lot of it. I personally don't regret having forked the time and money on this product. Caveat: it does not have the twist-for-rudder movement so I paired it with the Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals (
http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/pedals.html
). Maybe I will upgrade the pedals in the future to be more on par with the Warthog, but for now it is working fine. All working nicely (FSX + Joystick/Throttle + Pedals) under Windows 8 (had to reinstall the drivers for the Warthog but after that it works perfectly).
I also used the T.Flight Sick X from Thrustmaster (
http://www.thrustmaster.com/en_UK/products/tflight-stick-x
) and it works very nicely, but I guess that if I were to buy a joystick of this type today I'd go for the T16000M (
http://www.thrustmaster.com/en_UK/products/t16000m
) because of its HALL sensors (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall_effect_sensor
) which means no potentiometers and potentially better precision and longer product lifespan.
Hope this helps. []s

I think that your choice of Joystick really depends upon how "seriously" you take the "Flight Simulator".
Your seriousness generally depends upon how much money you are prepared to spend on the control device of your choice; from a simple, low cost, "twist" flight Joystick with throttle and a few extra buttons; to an expensive, full-blown, Control Yoke and Rudder Pedals set-up!

The Saitex X52 is great. I have one that I've literally worn out. Well, the real problem is that the socket on the throttle that uses a cable to connect to the joystick is bad and the cable won't make reliable contact.
I bought a X-52 PRO to replace it with, but I really liked the X-52 better.
Someday I'll try to take the bottom off of the throttle on the X-52 and see if the socket can be fixed.
Either one is good.

FOZZER is right, it also really depends on what kind of Aircraft / Heli' you like to fly in the most ??
Also depends on how much $$$ you wanna Spend .
I sometimes like to Fly Helicopters, mainly the Bell 206 Heli, or the Augusta westwind, so I use Saiteks AV8R-08 Joystick,, not an expensive Joystick at all, but its got quite a few features that are kinda neat, compared to others in the same price range.
I've wore out few Logitechs or they just quit working, so, I kinda gave up on those.
Please do NOT link images, it slows the forums down for other users.

Hi Stigma.
Like Jetranger, I used the AV8R for a long time and it is a great stick, particularly if you like flying twin props like me. Great for the DC3 etc as you can taxi using differencial throttle. I now use a Saitek Pro Flight yoke and throttle quadrant but the AV8R is still in use for rudder control.
I long for some rudder pedals but my wife (SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED) has to be convinced first.
