I just went to AirNav to download a couple of approach plates and note that they no longer list any ADF approaches.
A quick check over at EchoPlate reveals that ADF plates are not listed over there either.
Has the FAA discontinued ADF approaches ? Do you no longer have to demonstrate competence with ADF approaches on an instrument check ride ?
Just want to know !

I love it when I come across a NDB as an; "Outer Marker"...
...!
Maybe they are getting rarer now?...

They are getting rarer and rarer. ADF used to be common equipment in aircraft, but are quickly getting phased out in favor of GPS units. The FAA is no longer maintaining most NDBs, and phasing out the ones that go out of service.

I would imagine they'll still be somewhat popular in Alaska... but don't quote me on that. We still have them in Canada (although most have become GPS overlay), as well as newer aircraft only have them if requested, and Canada has removed them from their Standard Equipment Code list. Other parts of the world are still actively using them as well.

NDB approaches.....>>>
http://stoenworks.com/Tutorials/IFR,%20NDB%20%28ADF%29%20Approaches.html
..all sounds rather complicated!...
..!
San Francisco (KSFO) has a NDB installed as its Outer Marker on its Glide Path to runway 26R.
Its also equipped with a full Nav ILS landing system.
Funny thing is, I just dial up the KSFO NDB as a useful guide to the direction of the Glide Path, rather than for landing purposes!
I find NDB's useful or homing onto a location on the Map.
My local Airfield (EGBS) is equipped with a NDB right beside the Tower, and always guides me back home!...
...!
It would be a great pity to see them all disappear!
Paul...NDB's, Dials, and little yellow needles, are very comforting!...
