If you can stand and operate a tablet-like interface on a non-touchscreen system with the mouse, by all means, buy it. It seems to be compatible.
I cannot. Either stand nor operate it. And I'm hardly alone at that.
Will wait for Win9... IF M$ will have learned their lesson.

I am not sure what the grief is with Windows 8. I have it loaded and it works every bit as good as Windows 7.
There is a learning curve but there has been with every new OS.
I will be the first to admit that if you have Windows 7 there is really no need to upgrade as there is not that much new in W8

That's the problem exactly. Now that we know we can use Win8 with the same interface as Win7, the question has been raised...
In WHAT way, WHERE and HOW is Win8 different than Win7, beside the new and mostly useless Metro tablet-like interface?

I steadfastly REFUSE to learn to use a tablet interface on a mouse system.
The differences between the traditional interface of Win7 and the one under Win8 are easily compensated.

I don't believe Win8 is just like sVista or Millennium. They both were hastily end badly coded versions of Windows... actually Me was a last ditch attempt to save the 16bit Windows versions M$ made a memorable hash of, while sVista was and is a beta version of Win7 put on sale prematurely to make some $, €, £, ¥ or other currencies in a hurry.
Win8, at least for what we have seen up to now, seems to be a minor make-up of Win7.
Just add Metro.
In short, you have Win7? You don't STRICTLY need Win8. You want Metro because you are masochist or have a PC-based Tablet? Get Win8 or wait someone will make a Metro-looking, or any other tablet-usable framework to mount on Win7.
That's all folks.

If it's not broke, don't fix it!
My FS9 and FSX run perfectly happily on Windows 7 so why change?
Just my two penny worth.

I'm old enough to remember the same "I'm never ever gonna run that new-fangled Windows" claims back when XP started replacing Win98. I think it's a cycle we have to go through whenever a new OS is released. History repeats itself. And the old dies hard.
My thanks to those who reported that FSX works okay with Win8. Good to know.
My 10-year-old son's been using a LePan Android tablet for about a year. When he saw Win8, he said, "Looks cool. Better than using a mouse." I'm not ready for a new user interface, but he is. I think that's the future, like it or not.

The problem is not so much the readiness to use another kind of interface. The problem is that Win8 is a wonderful solution for a problem that does not exist.
Or perhaps I should say: the REAL problem is that Win8 is the harbinger of the problem, not its solution.
Who among you has ever thought: "
DAMN IT, why are they not making another kind of interface than this grubby, insensate, badly made, hellish mouse
"?
You see the point?
It's not that the mouse is bad, it's just simply more
fashionable
to have tablets, this days, than other means like laptops or stationary computers. No matter that you must use a software keyboard that has no feel and restricts the screen size... which is good still for short text, but try and write an essay on it, I dare you... and I'm not even going to speculate the kind of hell you'll go through trying to use Photoshop or other image or even other kind of graphical processing software... and in fact docking stations with physical keyboards and even mouse are not unheard of for tablets, if still quite rare.
Fashion pushes part of the market. The market made for those whose vocabulary's most important words are "
cool
" and "
look
" most of the times, if not always, used together. Even in spite of ergonomics. Even in spite of common sense. Those for whom the LOOK is all that matters, and LOOKING COOL is paramount, you can be sure would like nothing better than having their normal, even mundane PC to LOOK COOL like a tablet.
Win8, AKA Win7M (
M
for
Metro
), is for them. Not so much for sensible people.
After all, it's hardly a secret that M$ is lately clumsily trying to
prostitute itself
set up itself as an Apple copycat. Just remember from whence it came the Flight debacle.
Nice, old, good times past when M$ had a personal pride and spat in the eye of Apple... a pride those who followed them were consequently proud to share... where are you gone?
I guess you can live without personal pride, if you are small and mercenary enough.
