My 10-year-old son's been using a LePan Android tablet for about a year. When he saw Win8, he said, "Looks cool. Better than using a mouse." I'm not ready for a new user interface, but he is. I think that's the future, like it or not.
The problem is not so much the readiness to use another kind of interface. The problem is that Win8 is a wonderful solution for a problem that does not exist.
Or perhaps I should say: the REAL problem is that Win8 is the harbinger of the problem, not its solution.
Who among you has ever thought: "
DAMN IT, why are they not making another kind of interface than this grubby, insensate, badly made, hellish mouse"?
You see the point?
It's not that the mouse is bad, it's just simply more
fashionable to have tablets, this days, than other means like laptops or stationary computers. No matter that you must use a software keyboard that has no feel and restricts the screen size... which is good still for short text, but try and write an essay on it, I dare you... and I'm not even going to speculate the kind of hell you'll go through trying to use Photoshop or other image or even other kind of graphical processing software... and in fact docking stations with physical keyboards and even mouse are not unheard of for tablets, if still quite rare.
Fashion pushes part of the market. The market made for those whose vocabulary's most important words are "
cool" and "
look" most of the times, if not always, used together. Even in spite of ergonomics. Even in spite of common sense. Those for whom the LOOK is all that matters, and LOOKING COOL is paramount, you can be sure would like nothing better than having their normal, even mundane PC to LOOK COOL like a tablet.
Win8, AKA Win7M (
M for Metro), is for them. Not so much for sensible people.
After all, it's hardly a secret that M$ is lately clumsily trying to
prostitute itself set up itself as an Apple copycat. Just remember from whence it came the Flight debacle.
Nice, old, good times past when M$ had a personal pride and spat in the eye of Apple... a pride those who followed them were consequently proud to share... where are you gone?
I guess you can live without personal pride, if you are small and mercenary enough.
