Just watched it live. Not sure what is more of a feat, Herr Baumgartener jumping out at 127,000 feet or..........watching on my laptop, in Germany, in my house, via wifi, the whole thing live Shocked

Matt

PS, well Done Felix  Cool Cool Cool

It's a bit of stretch. Watching a balloon for two hours, I had to hit the refresh button a couple times. Smiley

I only watched the last half and hour............. Embarrassed

So I am seeing some people think this guy re-entered the Earth's atmosphere when technically he had around 100 more miles to go before he would actually be jumping from space!  Grin
But I guess that is missing the point...everyone go buy Red Bull NOW!!! IT GIVES YOU WINGS!!!  Grin

This was so amazing to watch.... it's so awesome that humans strive to push the boundaries like Felix and the Red Bull Stratos team have done today.

I couldn't believe it when he started to spin and tumble like that.... but good on 'em that he got it stabilized without deploying the drogue chute.

65 years ago today... Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in the Bell X-1.  And now Felix Baumgartner has done it without the use of a vehicle.

Awesome.

Cool

65 years ago today... Chuck Yeager officially broke the sound barrier in the Bell X-1.

The sound barrier had been broken several times between 1945-1947.

I'm sorry that I did not include the word "officially" in my post.   We all know that Chuck Yeager was "officially" the first one to do it.

Grin If a balloon could make the trip to outerspace, and he stepped off the jump platform, we would still be watching him for weeks. Just sort of floating there and shrugging his shoulders!  Grin
Some media has headlined him as a daredevil, which is complete rubbish.  Tongue

With no lateral motion and no air resistance he would fall very quickly.

The force of gravity on the ISS 200 miles above the earth's surface is 90% of that on the surface.

I need to think for a minute. Cheesy Because the earth has lateral motion, and the balloon had equal lateral motion, which is what kept the balloon near the launch site. Once entering space, the balloon would be free of resistance and still have motion? So wouldn't it take weeks to re enter atmosphere? Smiley

Any object that travels at 17,500 mph will orbit the earth regardless of its altitude.  It could be a foot off the ground and it would still orbit.  You would have a difficult time keeping it on orbit, though, because the air and buildings and trees and mountains would tend to slow it down and you would constantly have to apply force to overcome the resistance.  You don't have that problem in space.

Conversely, any object that travels less than 17,500 mph will be overcome by gravity and fall back to earth.

How do spacecraft re-enter the atmosphere?  They fire braking rockets to slow their lateral motion.  Once their lateral motion is insufficient to overcome gravity they fall.

Edit - I neglected to consider the relative gravity based upon distance from the center of gravity.  Orbital velocity at the earth's surface is 17,650 mph.  In low earth orbit it is 17,450 mph.  Wikipedia
