When folks were learning how to use new technology there were plenty of manuals to read..

http://www.retronaut.co/2012/09/how-to-use-the-telephone-1917/

Back in the very early 60's I knew an older lady who always ended her call by just hanging up. She meant no harm, she just never read the manual.  Cool

Better than my wife when we were dating. After we would say 'good bye', she would start another conversation!  Grin
It took a while to train her that 'good bye' means 'good bye' not lets talk about something else  Grin

... Grin... Grin...!

I must admit, I do the same thing, after the "Goodbye", when conversing with all my Children on the Telephone....
At the end of each conversation, I suddenly recall something else I was desperate to tell them, and temporally forgotten, (in my long list list of things to tell them)....
...and so the conversation goes on...ad infinitum....Grin... Grin...!

Paul...give me a ring sometime!... Wink...!

Better than the endless;
"You put the phone down first"
"No, you put the phone down first"
"OK, we both put the phone down together"
"OK, after three, one, two, three"
"You cheated, and did not put the phone down"
"You did the same"
"OK, then both together"
"OK, go!"
Long pause................
"You still have not put the phone down"
"Well neither did you"..................and so it goes on and on and on.

20 years of marriage later......
"Be home soon, love you, bye".......click....... Grin Grin

Ahoy-hoy

Quote:
n the 1870s, Scottish-born inventor Alexander Graham Bell did much development for the newly-invented telephone. Bell's preferred salutation, ahoy-hoy was derived from the nautical term "Ahoy" which in its turn is derived from Dutch "hoi" meaning "hi". A recent resurgence in the popularity of the term has resulted from its use by The Simpsons character Montgomery Burns, who often answers the telephone with the greeting of "Ahoy-hoy." The use of the now-defunct ahoy-hoy, instead of the standard "hello", is a running joke referring to Mr. Burns' very advanced age.

...

Ahoy-hoy? No, you have the wrong number. This is 5246.
I suspect you need more practice working your telephone machine.

A bad day at golf is better than a good day at work.
