I am sure that Ozzy will rip into me when he reads this, as I should have known better, but still, live and learn
I downloaded some free software. I needed a pdf editor and for a one use only, there is no way I am paying $$$$$$$ to Adobe just to fiddle about with one pdf file. Anyway, the editor worked fine, except that these people (who I think were born out of wedlock) added a nice bit of software called searchsafer (it will also rename itself Chatzum)
. This is a browser hijacker (I use firefox). Firstly, it puts a new search bar into your browser. No problem reset the homepage, but then it opens up each and every new tab to searchsafer.com, this is not to mention what ever it is doing in the background. Norton and Mcafee will not pick this up so you need to run some sort of malware program to get rid of it. There are a hundred different sites for getting rid of this shitty bit of software, but I did not find a single one that worked as a whole to remove it. If you end up being got by it then this is how I removed it.
Firstly I went to Control panel and removed the basic program Chatzum (mine had self renamed). This gets rid of the basic program, but still leaves hidden bits. Now go to Firefox Extensions and remove the extension searchsafer (or chatzum, what ever is listed). After this I ran Firefox as normal. The searchsafer search bar was gone, but each time I opened a new tab, the new tab was opened with searchsafer. So after that I ran some malware software. I used malwarebytes-anti-malware. It is free and they do not sting you with a "to remove the problems you now need to subscribe/buy our software" as most seem to. This will find a couple of hidden entries. I removed them, and went back to Firefox. Still the same tab problem. Finally I you need to go to Firefox "about:config" Right click and then reset this entry "browser.newtab". Once you have reset it, right click and select "modify". You can then enter what ever search engine you want to open up when you open a new tab. I entered google.com To get this far was a day and an evening of putting my hair out and using some choice wordage. A slow and painful death is way too good for the people to write viruses, hijackers and malware. Personally, I would go for the Marellus Wallace approach........"What now? Let me tell you what now. I'ma call a coupla hard, pipe-hittin' "
chaps
", who'll go to work on the homes here with a pair of pliers and a blow torch. You hear me talkin', hillbilly boy? I ain't through with you by a damn sight. I'ma get medieval on your ass".

After you reprieved my from the deepest pile of poo I had ever fallen in to (for those who do not know, I accidentally formatted my wife's work hard drive with all the school reports he had just spent weeks writing and) last time Mark, I am surprised that even major begging would result in help. I thought I used up a lifetime of help credits with my last fuax-pas......

I had a few browser hijacks recently. Oddly, they were from legitimate freeware programs downloaded from the official website. I clicked the "do not install" setting on the addons, but it still installed them. Maybe they weren't malicious, but they lost my trust when they appeared without my consent.
Basically I downloaded and updated the following: Avira Anti-virus, Comodo Internet Security, Microsoft Security Essentials, Spybot Search and Destroy, Malwarebytes and TDSSKiller (by Kapersky). A grand total of zero quid spent - It's all free software.
I went into safemode and then opened the browsers and disabled and deleted the addon, then independently ran the aforementioned software. I also processes from the MSConfig and deleted registry entries.

That is pretty much what happened to me. I did sellect the do not install tab, but it appears not to have made the slightest bit of difference.

Yeah, it's a pain. Of the software I mentioned, all but TDSSKiller are on my computer by default. I don't put any faith in McAfee or Norton. Comodo does a great job of identifying threats and stopping them from working until you approve them, or quarantine. The software would try to load up in the temporary files folder but Comodo would stop it from doing anything. The dodgy software was fighting a losing battle, and then I zapped it
