Hi!

Was just wondering if anyone else is starting to use Bing more these days (or any other search engine).  I used to be a google addict but these days I just type what I want into the address field of IE (7!) and it looks up Bing and to be honest I'm not bothered by that any more.  I don't like the big picture they have on the Bing homepage but I bypass that.  I also bypass all the annoying (for me) google "autocomplete" dropdowns!

Anyway any thoughts welcome. Do you have a favourite search engine?

Many thanks,

Pierre

I tried Bing and went back to Google. Too many wierd and irrelevant results from Bing. Google is almost always spot on when I'm trying to find something.

You have the option to set Google or any other search engine as your default, to get its results from the address field, and you can turn off autocomplete, too. Better move to IE 8, it's more secure than IE 7.

When Bing first came out I would do a search, go to the site I searched, and copy the URL of the site to paste in a forum or email etc. The copied and pasted URL would always take the recipient of my post to the Bing search page and not to the actual site. I tried three three different times and gave up. I don't know if that issue has been fixed because I never went back. Bing is out of my life forever though.
I've always been leary of the giants like Google, but yeah, I use it when I have to.
I use Yahoo search most of all, because I've always cheered for the underdog.    Smiley

It may be just me, but using Google as my search engine, I recently find that it appears to note my search preferences, and automatically place annoying ads related to those preferences on each page that I open!
I then have to manually get my; "Add Block" and; "Ad Preferences" to remove them every time...but this is a constant process!

The same sort of annoying adds that now appear on each of the U-Tube videos..(maybe for the same reason?).
(Maybe they are placed there for some very good reason...attracting money?)

There seems to be no way of permanently stopping these ads from appearing.

I've tried a number of other search engines, but none of them seem to be quite as efficient, and as accurate, as Google.

I download quite a few things.
Many times i noticed Bing was a part of it. I uncheck, but one time i forgot to do it, and afterwards i had a lot of work to get rid of it! That i dont like.
I use Google, but stay away from their privacy section.

I've used Firefox since it was first invented, but even with various FF plug-ins installed, and various settings created,  I still get bombarded with Adverts on my Web Pages, which I have to manually delete!

Advertising on Video displays; U-Tube, News Media Players, etc, has now become a particular annoyance, waiting for them to finish before viewing the content. (Often unable to by-pass them).

Paul....Google Search Engine... Wink...!

...and why do I keep getting pestered to download; "Google Chrome" as a Browser, at the top of my FF Page!... Angry...!

You get pestered by Google-Chrome because that's what marketing departments do!

We're getting off topic, search engines to browsers, it seems. Firefox is the best for printing stuff from the web, but the Mozilla crew have recently become picky about out-of-date plug-ins. At one point they blocked old versions of Java, mainly to avoid security risks, but that broke many web apps that were Java-dependent. And Firefox takes the longest to start up of any browser I've seen. Chrome is bloody fast but I don't see many people using it at the university where I work. IE9 is everywhere, the standard by any measure, where work must be done.

I don't know what ads look like anymore... I have AdBlock Plus. Just get Google Chrome and AdBlock Plus!

I use Firefox with Google as my home page. I've never suffered from this problem. It might be the way you have it set up. Check the Firefox & Google preferences.

I prefer Google as a search engine but find the Ordnance Survey option on Bing Maps* useful for planning my walks out in the country. (This only applies to the UK.)

Here's a sample OS map of my local area showing public footpaths & bridleways.

Big Bag of Cookies for you, Doug!... Smiley...!

I had no idea that the copyright Ordnance Survey Maps were available FOR FREE on the Web...(Via Bing)...!
Wonderful, for my Motor-Bike (and walk) trips around my County.
I have the original set of OS Maps (£1.40 each) for Herefordshire and the surrounding Counties, but they are all hopelessly out-of-date now, and the new replacement ones are very expensive!

Many thanks for the reminder, Doug...
Got it Bookmarked in my "Maps Folder"... Wink...!
