The following shots are taken from a middle-campaign (1962) of a hypothetical "Cold War Gone Hot" scenario that is the basis of the combat flight sim Strike Fighters 2: Europe. With a couple expansion packs and the fantastic NATO Fighters 4+ mod the campaigns (1 each in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s) are extremely busy! Once in a 1980s mission I counted ~150 allied aircraft with ~100 Soviet fighters responding to our combined attack just South of East Berlin...plus the SAMs were thick and weather was bad!

Anyways, here are some shots of my current campaign (in 1962) flying the English Electric Lightning F.2...which I started after 3 failed attempts to do a USAF F-100 campaign...I blame the F-100's horrid dogfighting abilities! The Lightning, is an absolute slayer of Migs on the other hand  Cool

The campaign map; mission is a fighter sweep over a friendly strike package:
BLUE is friendly, RED is the enemy
...

The 'Elephant Walk' of Lightnings to the runway
...

Full burner turning towards the battle space
...

Flying this high is extremely rare in all the campaigns, usually the fighting is low over the battlefield or some target..in later years, SAMs will tear you apart this high up.
...

First target of the sortie, poor guy has no idea what is coming.
...

Wingman stole my kill!  Grin
...

More to come...

continued....

The Lightning's main armament consists of 2 30mil cannon and 2 Firestreak (or Red Top) IR missiles. I have to say, the Fire Streaks are far more reliable and powerful than the early Sidewinders (in the early 60s)

First kill of the mission: a Firestreak smokes another Mig!
...

Friendlies called out a Mig-17 below the cloud layer; now he thinks he can out run my Lighting! Grin
Mig-17s rarely go this fast, most I encounter will stay around 250kts and do gentle turns to try to sucker you into a turning fight...when they run, they cant out turn a train!  Grin
BIG mistake on his part...
...
As I said...big mistake....2 30mils make quick work of the Mig-17  Cool
...

Next target: another Mig-17..this time he is doing a good job, we got into a horizontal rolling scissors, HOWEVER, the Lighting has an incredible amount of power, so I was able to move it into my plane: the vertical fight.
...

The AI in this sim can be stupid...but here is a case of intelligent wingman AI. While I kept the Mig in the vertical scissors, my wingman made slashing attacks, after a couple, one finally unloaded some 30s into the Mig.
...

The above was the last Mig in our assigned area, so time to screw around: The Lighting bares it's fangs
...

"Olds Lead requesting fly-by"
...

The after-action report...as you can see, the Lighting dominates. In a mission like this I would expect half the kills and ~2-3 losses if we were using F-100s.
...

Graphics in the sim are much better than this, however as I said before, sometimes the airspace gets very VERY busy with hundreds of aircraft all firing and being hit, AAA, SAMs, flak, and large tanks battles on the ground...so to keep it running smooth, I crank the graphics down.

If you want to try Strike Fighters 2 ( The Israel one is a ton of fun too)

If you want to see the wide array of freeware addons for SF2:

That's it for now...off to do some fishing.

Tailwinds,
Adam
