...I come across those interesting little snippets of news, which encourages me to wheel out my little Flight Sim, Cessna 150, and go exploring!

Fatal crash in 1978, by a Piper Cub in the San Gabriel mountains in Southern California, during a flight from Cheriaco Summit Airfield (L77) in the (nearby) desert, to Cable Airfield (KCCB) in the Los Angeles Valley.

http://aircraftwrecks.com/pages/pa-18.htm

Scroll down the page for the Video of the recent exploration.

I've filed a flight Plan to follow the same route, in a Flight Sim Piper Cub, to experience similar inclement weather conditions whilst negotiating the steep climb over the San Gabriel mountains, and the steep drop down the valley to Cable Airfield.
A trip I am normally familiar with, but always in good weather conditions!

Mountains, and low cloud, are a very bad mixture!

I enjoy these little flying explorations, chasing news!

Just a little more news on this fascinating, but sad, subject...>>>

http://pacaeropress.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=5341895

I have spent some time tracing his fatal flight along Interstate 10 (Route 66) from Chiriaco Airfield (L77) to Cable Airport (KCCB) in my Flight Sim, Piper Super Cub, in similar, adverse weather conditions.

Paul.

I remember carrying out a similar Flight Sim search, following the loss of Steve Fossett in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in 2008....>>>
