the first day i got fsx and to this day i never figured out how you turn the plane while backing up. When you back up from your gate, how do you turn the plane?

If its anything like FS 2004, then...

Shift + P pushes the plane rearwards, quickly followed by "1" to turn the tail to the left (nose to the right), and "2" to turn the tail to the right (nose to the left).
Shift + P again will stop the aircraft movement.

Paul...FS 2004... Cool...!

I have both FSX and FS 2004, but FS 2004 is my preferred Flight Sim, and I presume much of the controls are the same in both Sims... Wink...!

Don't forget...its a bit tricky... Smiley...!

Use the numbers on the top row of keys to turn the aircraft, (not the Num Pad)...

And the "1" and "2" keys have to be tapped QUICKLY immediately after pressing Shift + "P", then WAIT for it to happen!

Leave it too late to press 1 or 2, and it wont turn the aircraft! (Its timed).
Press Shift + P again to stop the process.

A little bit of practice and it will all come right...trust me!.. Grin...!

Paul...finished practicing!... Grin.. Grin...!

Just double check the keyboard commands incase it has been accidently changed.

And it's not Shift+P+1 like I always tried, give it a millisecond after letting go on Shift and P before hitting either 1 or 2.

Keep practicing the routine until you get used to it.

It can be a bit tricky, but after a while you will remember how its done successfully!
Its all in the timing of key presses!
It works every time for me!
Keep trying!

Paul.

For me, this has always worked for FS2004 and FSX installed on various computers and operating systems.

The important thing in the pushback routine is: After you start pushback with (Shift+P) DO NOT press any  keys or buttons other than the numbers that control pushback. You can (usually) pan with the hat switch, but most any other key or button will cause the sim to lose focus on the  number keys so they will not work to turn the aircraft.

As mentioned, the keys are the keyboard number keys, not the numpad keys. Release the parking brake before pushback.

(Shift+P) then release- starts pushback straight back
1- plane will travel back about 1/2 plane length and then start 90 degree left turn and then continue straight back.
2- same as 1, but a right turn.

Two more keys not mentioned in the learning center..

3- will pause pushback. Resume pushback with key 1, 2 or 4. (If you're being pushed by a default tug it will disengage and return to it's parking spot but the pushback will continue.)
4- will cease turning and continue straight back.

Number keys can be pressed at any time and any order.

With a little practice you can parallel park your 737...     Cheesy

I've found that most tail draggers will not turn during pushback
