WEIRD OR WHAT...

I got thinking after typing out my reply to today's post by Fozzer "Paul" about another of his wonderful meals.

It is odd what folks do for fun.

Take today for example, there must be thirty little aluminum, fiberglass or wood boats on the river with folks of all ages fishing.

They are sitting in their vessels with snowmobile suits on, there is not one boat I see that has a top on it and there they sit in the rain.

Bobbing up and down amongst the whitecaps on the river, moderate winds and patiently waiting for some fish to swim along and jump into their boat...darn odd or weird if you ask me... Roll Eyes

Now two avid lady birdwatchers told us at the afternoon tea in the commons room yesterday they will be out all weekend come rain, snow, sleet or hail to watch some birds down in a swampy area about a hour drive from here.

They have gone and it is cold, damp and raining.

To sit in a swamp and watch for birds is, well odd, weird or what.   Roll Eyes

The military scuba diving club is doing a dive today, we counted about thirty or more of them by the river bank.

What fun is there in going underwater when it is cold, damp and raining out.  All those little fishing boats would give me second thoughts to that hobby whether one puts out a dozen diving flags or not.

I think those people...well they are just weird... Roll Eyes

Then there are those folks about twelve cars and half ton trucks sitting at the end of the military runway waiting for the aircraft to come and go.

We counted that many when we went to Canadian Tire for plant food.  Old girls idea, not mine.  If you can't eat it why grow it?... Smiley

What do they see in a bunch of aluminum going up and down...got me...I think they are nuttier than the birdwatchers.   Shocked

Now...folks need some direction in their lives in my opinion.

Why do they not come out to a bug smasher field and look at some rag and tube aircraft with the odd aluminum spam can thrown in?

They can have a coffee, tea, pop, chocolate bar or chips.
There are comfortable chairs to sit in also and look at aircraft pictures.

They will take home with them many things.

First and foremost, knowledge.  Who knows more about aviation than a bunch of Old Rocking Chair Retired Flying Geezers.   Wink

Yes, we chew the rag, we do not stretch the truth telling our stories (unless the other guy does) and we are happy to enlighten new folks.

Clothing style, well that is something else.

You should see the way some of these fishermen, bird watchers and airplane spotters dress.  HUH...no class.

Where else would one see a good looking gentleman wearing farm green coveralls and rubber boots, or a doctor, lawyer or Indian Chief wearing blue jeans and wool plaid shirts of various colors and with matching coats.

Right here at the bug smasher field, that is where.   Wink

Spiced up coffee or tea, the smell of grand cigars or a good pipe tobacco all adds to the atmosphere of the club house.

Now mind you there are a few things one has to watch.

First you don't just go and sit at the Bull Shit Table unless invited....no sir....that is a no no.   Shocked

However once we get to know you, well you become part of the gang.

The knowledge and information one consumes from just listening to our Tall Tales (I mean flying experiences) will last most folks a lifetime.

So with all this to offer, why would anyone want to do anything else?   Huh

Especially, fishing, bird watching, scuba diving or aircraft spotting, folks that do that, well I think they are weird or what... Lips Sealed

Cheers...Doug

Doug, I think this is one of those wonderful things about us as a species. Everyone is different and gets their jollies in different ways, some want to write down the numbers of all locomotive engines on the Met. Line, some wish to have copious amounts of nookie with members of the opposite or even their own sex.
Personally I think that cooking is a wonderful release and as I can't paint or compose music my creativity gets going in the kitchen. Nothing makes me happier than getting a load of friends round to cook for and seeing clean plates.
Personally I think fishing is duller than a very dull thing, one of my friends is mad for it and spends a wee fortune on fishing gear and holidays where he spends all his time fishing.
Thank goodness we're all different or the world would be a singularly dull place lacking in variety...

Thanks for the reply "bass"... Smiley

You would really enjoy what we call a shore lunch.

Fly, boat or drive into a remote lake and catch just enough fish to feed who is with you.

Clean and fillet the fish and cook over open wood fire.

Cold salads is all you need to go with it.

Wonderful, relaxing and very very tasty... Wink

Who knows...you might catch a Bass.... Grin

Bass

Nontechnical name for any of numerous edible marine and freshwater spiny-finned fishes

Any of various North American freshwater fish with lean flesh (especially of the genus Micropterus)

The lean flesh of a saltwater fish of the family Serranidae

My dad and I dont fish so much as donate lures, tackle, and bait to the fish   Grin

Lately my hang out has become work. At WACO we have loads of good aviation stories floating about the hangers and office. Heck I just found out our poor showcase YMF-5 was totaled TWICE and did an off-field dead-stick landing! Now, why do the pilots get their kicks flying a heavily used biplane that is crooked in every sense of the word??  Grin (I think they do because it is a WACO duh Wink )

Our family has owned several Great Lakes over the years...great aircraft... Smiley

What is the chance of sending me a FREE WACO??? Cool

Folks really do need to get a flight in an open cockpit to enjoy aviation... Wink

How about some pictures of the new WACOs or GREAT Lakes from where you work.
You could post them in the PHOTO SECTION here.    Smiley

Aircraft are like ships and Land Rovers...they have a character all their own... Wink     Grin

Grin sorry Doug, I cant send a free WACO your way! HOWEVER, if you are ever in the Battle Creek, MI USA area, you are welcome to stop by for a tour of our facility! There will be a fly-in at WACO on the 4th of July so I am told. Our showcase WACO is N113KJ, there are pictures of her floating all over the internet.

About the Great Lakes, I have to say the folks that built them in the 70s and 80s did not know how to draft very well  Roll Eyes, those drawings are very irritating to work with. HOWEVER, I hear so much praise about them every single day I cannot help but admire them. Chandler Aviation has been flying some Great Lakes for ~30yrs doing aerobatic training. You do not use a plane for THIRTY YEARS of aerobatic training unless the plane is a darn good aircraft!

A tid bit, I very few people have suffered injuries and no one has died in one of our WACOs despite many of them getting totaled. You just cannot beat a steel tube and fabric aircraft's toughness.

I surely make my own flyes to catch it.  Grin

Next time you catch a fish and want to make it out there. Wrap it in tinfoil with butter, salt, vegetables (you find where you are) and throw it into glows for a short time (depends on the catch Roll Eyes. Eat that fish with some dark or white bread, and you will be relaxing. Wink

Wish we where lucky with sea-bass...
There is a great spot nearby but there are a few problems:
They only bite at high water.
The current there is extremely strong so you need heavy bait, but heavy bait=sinking bait and seabass is usualy found near the surface!(at least here it is)

Doug, I do not have any pictures myself of WACOs or Great Lakes. However, during a tour given to my class mates they took a ton of pictures of the facility, so I will try to get their pictures together....if I can figure out how to post pictures on this site!

Now about bass.....mmmm bass *drools*

Went out fishing today, but too choppy outside so we had to stay in the harbour.
Luckily we brought worms this time so we could go fishing for the flats,we cuaght about 8 in total but only 4 where of a good enough size.
Anyways,we now know where to find the worms and the fish. Cool

So glad you can find the worms, jetprop.

But this

is about to ruin our salmon fishing in scandinavia.
Those big salmon breedings the norwegians have, to make money, spread the louse to any fish crossing those areas!
Money makes, lives goes.  Angry

I doubt its only norwegian fish farms, anyways there are fish the same as this born in the wild. why dont we see them very often? They are the weak that predators go after. On farms they do not have predators and therefore are able to survive.(as copied of a comment Grin)
