Goodly afternoon all...
-----The RAF--------where balls count !!
Conversation overheard on the VHF Guard (emergency) frequency 121.5 MHz while flying from Europe to Dubai ...
Iranian Air Defence Site:
'Unknown aircraft you are in Iranian airspace. Identify yourself.'
Aircraft:
'This is a British aircraft. I am in Iraqi airspace.'
Air Defence Site:
'You are in Iranian airspace. If you do not depart our airspace we will launch interceptor aircraft!'
Aircraft:
'This is a Royal Air Force GR4 Tornado fighter. Send 'em up, I'll wait!'
Air Defence Site: ( ..... total silence)
I love the RAF
Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

I have heard similar conversations on 121.5/243.0 - they happen more often than people think in that area, generally in the following format
"you're in our airspace"
"no we're not"
"yes you are"
"no we're not"
etc etc. Until the Iranian gets bored or the American goes away!
Probably a true conversation. Certainly not a Tornado GR4 though. That wouldn't hang around for anything being a very non air to air combat bomber!

The tornado is a multi-role fighter.
Even tyough it is specialised in air to ground combat from the looks of its arnament....

Yes, and the GR4
variant
(and the GR1 before it) is certainly not an air to air platform. To have any manouevrability in a fight would require just about everything to be be jettisoned. Probably including the Navigator (WSO).
It would run away (very fast) if threatened!
Even the "fighter" variant of the Tornado, the F3, was not a pure bred fighter (hey, it was a converted bomber!), but a long range interceptor. It's job was to get airborne and point towards the Soviet bomber hoards over the north sea!

To be honest, you had to be quite lucky back then to last long enough to get onto the Camel!
