Hi Lads & Lasses.
I'm new to Simviation, and need help.
I was here a few years back and have rejoined as I want to start flying again.
I have loaded FSX (Deluxe) with Acceleration pack and some other add-ons, before I used Windows XP Pro and had no problems, I am now using Window 7 Ultimate and i can play for less that half hour then my computer just turns off, I have read lots of forum about this and some say that W7 64 bit is to blame, so I'm thinking of re-installing FSX and some add-ons with a new OS
Should i use windows 7 32bit or go back to Windows XP?
I only want an OS and FSX on the PC, as I have purchased a CH Product yoke and Saitek Pedels and have the Saitek Radio Stack and Multi panel, so really want to get the best out of my fligh sim.

My PC spc for this is
AMD athlon 64x2 dual core 2.1ghz CPU
ATI Radeon 4670 1 Gig DDR3Graphics Card
4 gig DDR2 Memory and a 300 gig SATA HD.
any help please.

Thanks in Advance

I would stick with windows 7.. one thing . it is better to install it in its own dir.like C:fsx. and not x86 program files. as to it shutting down not to sure what could be causing that.

Thanks for the quick reponce, windows 7 64 bit or 32 bit, as the microsoft site say's FSX deluxe is not compatable with the 64bit version?

I have not problems at all running fsx with win 7 64 . Just make sure its in its own dir. because win 7 limits the admin right to the program file dir.

A computer shutting down on its own probably has nothing to do with the software you're running. Biggest suspect would be overheating. If you can, check for any "thermal" events in the system's logs, and verify that the fans in your cpu are actually blowing air, not blocked by dust.

Like the wise man said, there's no problems running FSX on Win7-64 long as you follow the procedures. The one-and-only time I've had anything not be able to run on Win7 was when a user had an ancient 16-bit Foxpro database program that failed.

All seems well in the system, but I might format and re-install everything, I an running a 750 watt poer supply, I think it might be just getting old, I've had it for a few years now, I wish my Mrs would let me put it on my main PC 6 core in the living room but I don't like sleeping in the dog house..LOL
thanks for the help so far, will keep my eyes open for anyone else suggesting anything. Wink

Hi GlenEagles. I'm new to the forum but many years in IT (1976 to present with my own business for the last two years, and SIMS since 1983). Ok past my credentials, what I find in my experience and your case is that upgrading to Windows 7, you will be using more of your existing 4GB. Let me explain, Windows XP is a 32bit O/S and can only physically use and address 3.2GB of the 4GB, that's it, maxed out, a physical math limitation, nothing can be done to get past this, unless using the very rare Wndows XP 64bit. Now you've upgraded to Win7 64 bit, which CAN and is using more than the 3.2GB of RAM. But now in your existing RAM, possibly from date of purchase, you could have a bad block of memory in this previously unused and dormant 800MB. Now when you load a powerful program such as FSX, it is loading data into this bad block as you fly, hence the time to run of the half hour before a crash. I would focus on trying to borrow some fresh, new RAM and diagnose from there before radically cleaning out everything. At least then you know how to proceed. You can then  purchase new RAM, still one of the cheapest components today, offering the biggest performance boost. And with Windows 7 64bit you could go to 8GB or higher if your motherboard can handle it. If your RAM is bad, you will simply wipe out the software unnecessarily, and still end up with software crashes.

The one other thing is that you have installed an add-on which is buggy, poorly written or has become corrupted, and is causing what we call a memory leak. Also it explains the failure after a half hour or so of running.

Your PSU seems poweful enough for your hardware listed in your signature.

But try the RAM first and then re-install FSX to see if you have a memory leaking add-on.

Hope this helps

Cheers
Andrew

I'm Running FSX Acceleration on Windows 7 64bit with no problems. As the others say it’s probably overheating.

can you split your memory?
for example if your 4gb is 4X1gb, take out a pair of them, try a modern usb 2.0 memory stick that is ready boost enabled.
This will eliminate 2 of your drams and still give you memory to run the sim.
If the sim now runs OK then you know you have a bad dram/memory sim.
If still bad swap just one of the memory then the other if still problems.

Play another game that is cpu and gpu hungry and see if you have same problem.

You can then start swapping the drams to see if one has a bad area.

May the Mynd be with you.
So far my number of landings either passenger or pilot equal my number of takeoffs, but that is due to change Smiley

I've gone for a new Motherboard NEW AMD FX BULLDOZER QUAD CORE CPU 8GB DDR3 1333 RAM GIGABYTE MOTHERBOARD BUNDLE
3.8GHz TURBO SPEED ★ GIGABYTE M68MTS2 ★ TOP QUALITY RAM

That with power supply of 750 watts and a ATI 6700 1 gig DDR5 GPU and just the OS and FSX (Deluxe) running on it.
It arrives tomorrow, so I'll load each item Separately, rwbooting after each load.
Should i load the SDK from FSX Deluxe and accelerater?
I will then load less add-on than i had, as I'm sure one of these was the problem, as other games run no problem, that includes MW3, so I'm betting it was an add-on, I got some from ebay and they was pirates i think, as they came on a blank covered disc.

Thanks for the help, I will let you all know how it goes when I get started tomorrow.

Cheer Guys
Glen. Wink Wink Wink
