funchal elevation query (Read 1358 times)

i was trying to land at funchal (madeira) LPMA rwy 5
the approach plate gives the threshold at 147ft but when i eventually landed my altimeter was reading 714 ft my altimeter was set at 29.92 why the discrepancy?

The most obvious answer is the QNH at Funchal wasn't 1013/29.92, hence your altimeter was incorrectly set.

QNH was set at 29.92 for fenchal (local) I even flew a cessna at 100 ft above sea level ( couldnt go any lower) then i landed at fenchal and my altimeter still read 720 feet on the tarmac.....if for instance i sit on the tarmac at east midlands (EGNX) and set the altimeter to 29.92 it read 310 feet which is correct according to pooleys....

In FSX LPMA is poorly done, no doubt to accommodate the poor terrain elevaton map.
The airport elevation listed in the FSX map is 711ft.

thank god for that i thought i was losing it, i was working from an approach plate, so FSX is giving incorrect info then? phew!!

Isn't Funchal built partially on stilts on the side of a hill on the sea front. Probably explains it then.
That aside, you shouldn't be flying in Europe on 29.92 (or in.Hg) anyway!
