There are 2 options that I can think of that are plausible.

1: He slewed it onto the land then paused it to take the shot.

Or he started in the sea & ran the ship aground.

I actually wanted to crash into the beach but...it just didn't. It kept going until it finally crashed against one of the larger trees. Great fun

try it again, and when you hit land, try pressing G to switch the position of the gear, and see if that works.
