...therefore it is; Waterstone's...

What will become of St. James's Gate?

Pardon me, But isn't it supposed to be "St.James' Gate?

Most people think that flying a plane is dangerous, except pilots because they know how easy it is.
Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it.

No. It refers to only one St. James.

I have two teenage sisters who text me everyday and I am convinced their phones lack any sort of punctuation buttons, and certainly no form of spell check.   Roll Eyes

Thank God, I thought I was the only one. My youngest sisters (I am old enough to be their father) send me texts that I spend days trying work out what they mean. I have given up trying to follow some of their facebook conversation with their peers. You would need an Enigma machine to decode it Grin

It's the other way around for me....I punctuate and spell out all of my texts, but my mum uses annoying abbreviations Tongue

I think taking the apostrophe away is OK in this case. The store no longer belongs to Mr Waterstone and so it is no longer Waterstone's. Instead each store is now one of many Waterstones.

If there's no more possession why keep a possessive apostrophe?

Funny you should say that. When I get a text from my dad, it is like getting a text from a geriatric Kevin  Grin Grin
