I have a lot of aircraft in my hangar, both payware and freeware. When it's time to choose one, it takes a while to load the hangar. I was wondering if I could safely remove the default aircraft I never use from the simobject folder... I figure that if I remove an aircraft that is being used in a mission or a lesson then if I do try to load that mission or lesson then FSX will crash, correct? Is there any way to modify the mission or lesson to load with another aircraft than the default one?
Thanks for the help!

To speed up sim loading time and remove the default planes from the aircraft selection window the recommended procedure is to edit the panel= line in the aircraft.cfg file.

If that line references a non-existent panel FSX will treat the plane as AI and it will not show up in the selection screen.

What I did was open the the aircraft.cfg with Notepad.

Then I replaced (Ctrl+H) panel= with panel=off//

This will remove the plane from the selection screen without causing any issues with planes that use the default panels and/or sounds.

If at any time I want to use one of the planes for a mission or free flight then all I have to do is reverse the process to re-instate the default plane.

Hope this helps.

cheers,
Joe

If you fly multi-player and someone is flying a default aircraft that you have removed or disabled with the
panel=x edit, that aircraft and all its paints will no longer be seen by you. Another aircraft would be
substituted for the now "missing" aircraft so you would see that pilot in a different plane than the one
he or she is flying.

You can remove almost every default aircraft EXCEPT the Trike, because the sim starts up with that one, so if it isn't there you'll get a fatal error and the sim will shut down. At least this was what happened until FS9 when you didn't have the startup plane...

Up is the way to go.

On start-up FSX it will simply say "Plane not found" (or something like that) and the Free Flight menu will show no plane selected.

Here,s what I did..I created another folder called"FSX" on the root of my "C" drive.Inside that folder I created a folder called "Airplanes"(and a couple of others).I then copied and pasted all the a/c that I seldom flew into the "Airplanes" folder. Then in the FSX.CFG under [Main] "user objects" I added this:
SimobjectPaths.9=C:\FSX\Airplanes
If you don,t want them loaded, just comment the line out, like this://SimobjectPaths.9=C:\FSX\Airplanes
HTH..Lou
Edit...You can get FSX to start with any aircraft you want...

I could never see any benefit in removing any Default Aircraft, etc, and only causing various problems, (according to various Forum posts), especially in the region of Multiplayer activity as Paul mentioned, and maybe the loss of AI Aircraft?
I am always very wary about "removing" anything in the Simulator...it often causes more problems than it is worth!
Be very wary about removing any default? Aircraft folders containing "Gauges", etc. (They are often "Aliased to" from other Aircraft).
I tend to leave things alone, and not upset the boat unnecessarily !... Wink... Wink...
