I would suggest that you NOT install it to the default location. If it goes into the C:\Programs folder
you will be forever plagued with the Win7 overly-restrictive-protect-you-from-yourself issues.

I would install it, and the SDK, in the root of s separate drive  D:\Microsoft Flight Simulator X and
D:\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK,  for instance.
That will save you a lot of typing of paths in the future. You shouldn't run across any compatibility
issues with FSX itself. Make sure when you run the installer you right-click and select
"Run as Administrator"....you should use that option for anything you install with regards to FSX.
I actually use that option for ALL the programs/tools I install.

I know it may seen strange to some.....

..but in my version of Windows 7 Home Edition, all my flight sims, etc, are automatically installed into C/Program Files/Microsoft Games/FS2002, FS2004, FSX, etc, with no problems at all.
As Administrator I don't suffer any conflicts, strange requests, etc, at any time, (similar to my previous Win XP pro OS).
All my FS downloads fit nicely into their respective FS Folders, and only the FS .cfg files are stored in the root directory of my C Drive.
So, there you go...its "Program Files" default location for me...and it works!... Smiley...!

Just install it to C:\Microsoft FSX  Some do install to the rediculously long default path without
problems but it's up to you. I would NEVER install FSX in the defualt path. I did so with my
WinXp Pro system and have regretted it since day 2. When I installed Win7 X64 in a dual-boot
arrangement with my existing Xp Pro, I put that copy of FSX on a separate drive in the root directory.
I can get nto those files from either the Xp or Win7 side and they share a common "Addon Scenery"
drive so that when I install scenery to that drive it is seen by both FSX installs.
Had I let Win7 have its' way with me, I couldn't have done alot of that because of the overly-prorective
permissions.

The SDK is a set of documents and tools for those that wish to dabble in
gauges, scenery, aircraft creation as well as some totally worthless tools for
creating AI traffic plans and files.

Most users would probably never use it but it does contain a few useful tools that
are required for use with ADE, the 3rd party tool for creating/modifying airports,
for cteating, testing and modifying fx effect files and monitoring and even controlling
AI aircraft inflight.

..actually...

..the reason I like installing programs to "Program Files", is that if the program does not come with its own "uninstaller" program, it can safely be uninstalled via the Windows Control Panel* where "Delete" would be a bad thing to do to get rid of the program!
(The same thing also applied to Win XP).
All my programs are in one Folder, easy to trace alphabetically, and easy to uninstall safely.... Smiley...!
(Note that the Flight Sims come with their own built-in uninstaller on the Installation CD/DVD).

Paul.... Smiley....!

* Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features > [Program]...Right Click > Uninstall.

P.S. If you only have one Hard Drive, you have no other choice but to install Windows and all other programs on the same Hard Drive.

I've got fsx on windows 7 installed in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X & I don't have any problems. If you do install it there the only thing I would recommend doing is changing the folder from read only so it won't always ask for administrator permission when you try to add aircraft.
