How do aircraft know wind speeds? (Read 241 times)

On the default 737 and a321s etc they have a wind speed and direction reading on the PFD.

How do the aircraft work out wind speed and direction when they them selves are moving?

I presume computers get the velocity relative to the air (from indicated airspeed and heading), then compare that with the ground velocity (from GPS etc).
