Not a city, but Arkansas (Ar-can-saw) always confused me.

From the Mexican, Los Angeles should be 'los an-jhel-es'... (The Angels), but Los An-gee-lees is my personal pronunciation.

Of course, most spellings have been skewed by the horrificness that is American-English. I just refer to it as 'American' as I don't want to put my language to its name  Wink Grin

I think a lot of confusion is due to the appearance of the Spanish/South Americans in California and the surrounding areas, and naming various locations with their own pronunciations, and then the later visitors Anglicising the names... Wink...!

“Loss An-je-les,” ...or...“Loce Ahng-hail-ais.”
For most of the U.S. east and north of California, the “Loss An-je-les” rendering, local accents applicable, is prevelant. However, since wrenching its control from the former Spanish control quite prior to the last century, a great many of the Spanish-speaking have surged back in and the latter rendering may have a much greater influence on its local streets than was once so; of course, with it there has been other pronunciations that have little to do with the Los Angeles spelling.

"San Joe-see"   or  "San Ho-Say"
In my case, neither: "San Ho-zay"
To my knowledge, I have no direct Spanish ancestry (perhaps via the distant past of the Milesian Scots); I do, however, have a nephew whose middle name is José.

Trying to make a mild rant seem more polite, we have an introductory statement, "Pardon my French" to precede rude words... and we kicked the French out of it long ago; whether speaking of the city on the Missouri side or on the Illinois side (East Saint Louis) many, perhaps most, pronounce the name Saint Loo-wiss, as if putting the wiss where it belongs -- but there are many who do say Saint Loo-wee, with accent on the loo, however little.

Cool

Up here in NH, SimV member "H" and I have the city of Berlin.  That is "BURR lnnnn"  not "Bher LYN".  Emphasis on the first syllable added....... since the start of WWII.

And "Burrrrr" is the right phrase start to that name too, it being located in northern NH.

best,

Oh, I could say the same thing about the "Queen's English"...

UK PRONUNCIATION     "AMERICAN" PRONUNCIATION      COMMENTS

Guttering                    Gutters & Downspouts               Guttering? Is that like Stuttering, but with a "G"?
Car Park                     Parking Lot (or Parking Garage)    Sounds like a recreational area for automobiles...
Honour                       Honor                                      It all means the same thing...

Oh, one more thing... the fact that many locations in the US have Spanish names is part of our history and the influence that Latin America had (and has) on our culture. It's not a bad thing; it makes for "A More Perfect Union".

I have the same pet peeve when it comes to the Japanese word for "ritual suicide" and the word for "rice wine".

It's "Ha-ra Kí-rí", not "Harry Carey"!

And it's "Sa-kĕ", not Sa-kí"!

I hear those words pronounced that way, and I just want to remove the person's brain stem with my bare hands...
