Take a little leave and look what happens
This new layout is taking some getting used too...however.
Hello once again, it has been a few months, but have found myself lurking these forums lately and realized just how much I regret leaving, and deleting my account on the way out. SimV has always been my home forum since joining way back in 2003 for more then just flight sim.
Decided it was time to return, a lot has happened since my departure, think I last left off as enlisted and preparing to leave for the Army. Long story there but I never ended up shipping off as planned, its a very long story involving a voice telling me enlisting was a huge mistake, ignoring that voice, and bad things that kept happening and getting worse the closer it got to my ship date. My send off party the night before departure finally ended the whole deal, apparently I just wasn't meant to go, a misjudgement of distance resulted in me going off a stage and destroying my knee requiring surgery, discharged before my career ever began
Amazingly things seemed to improve almost instantly after the Army plans fell through, they say to follow your gut and if things are meant to happen they will. I refused to follow that rule, and karma bit me big time. It was for the best though, I have no regrets and happy that I didn't end up shipping.
Finally getting back into FS again after a long grounding, I sold off my beefy home built desktop a year ago and bought a laptop as it was desperately needed at the time. My plan is to begin building a new and improved FS rig come tax time. Though I have to say it is shocking how well the laptop handles FS9, not enough to be truly enjoyable but it has allowed me to get back into my AI project and maybe have a quick scenic flight once in awhile.
But enough babbling, there's probably a few of you wondering who is this nutcase
Some of the older members may have figured it out already. There's a funny story as to this new name, save that for another day, I'll just say it involves something I became involved in awhile back, my avatar might be a clue
Its good to be "home" again, look forward to catching up.

Welcome back.
If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.

I haven't been here long so I'm still meeting people but welcome back
BTW What smiley?
Most people think that flying a plane is dangerous, except pilots because they know how easy it is.
Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it.

Hello, again. Actually, I couldn't understand your closing the SimV account because of the Army even if you no longer had the time to visit.

Welcome back! Just outta curiosity how did you enjoy Taiwan? I lived in Taipei for 2 years in the mid-80's but haven't gotten back. I bought a great Apple ][e while I was there (the pirated model of course) and had some of my first flight-simming experiences on it.

Doing a little reading and settling in....though I'm still waiting on a complimentary marmalade bomb to come flying this way, or have those been replaced by something far worse

The closing of the account was non army related, it was a regretted personal move in what is now ancient history of a member exodus. See a few that have returned since though.

Just outta curiosity how did you enjoy Taiwan?
Of all the places I've been to over the years it topped them all. Spent almost 3 weeks living with a friend and her family in Chung-Li. I probably got to see more then the average tourist would, especially when it came to experiencing the culture more in depth. Didn't really do the touristy things, spent a lot of time with her just enjoying the normal day to day life, venturing out to various cities, night markets, going out with her friends and family for meals or just to have fun. The August heat humidity did make me a little sick from time to time but still able to have a blast.
Last few days the family took me on a trip to the other side of the island, up through the mountains...did a lot of hiking through some of the most stunning and beautiful places I've ever laid eyes upon. Words just can't describe it, for the first time in months I remember feeling truly at peace.
One thing I will never forget though, the people, everywhere, city or small mountain village. Never once felt awkward or like an outsider. Everyone I met was just so cheerful welcoming. I've been to a few places here in the US where just walking into a small town restaurant instantly makes time stop and everyone stare like
Who are you and what do you want?
I plan to return some day, though I've been saying that since I got home 5 years ago, still keep in contact with my friend and her brother. Video chatting is a wonderful thing
The rest of her family doesn't speak any English and my Chinese is well...lets not go there
Really hoping things will work out and I can make it next fall or winter, not making the mistake of going in August again. And next time if we all decide to go the bar the night before my departure and have a few drinks, there shall not be any shots dropped in my beer...I have no idea what it was, but that was the worst hangover I've ever experienced, and made the 14 hour long haul back to LAX the following night that much worse
Took a quick look, apparently the forum history no longer goes back far enough to find my old trip report/pictures

Sounds like you might have had a Flaming Dr. Pepper.

Been a while since I um, enjoyed (?) one.
Glad that you got so much out of your trip. If you do get back you try to get to Snake Alley in Taipei. There you can drink some very interesting shots...
