Just wondering what could cause this to happen. The patio area was built over 7 years ago so settling doesn't make sense. We have not had any rain other than a quick shower in 2 weeks. We have lived here for almost 2 months and never seen this before. I was out there last night at about 11pm and it wasnt  there so between 11pm and 7am this morning something pushed large amounts of dirt thru the cracks in the concrete squares. The square's are not lose at all. Thats my size 11 shoe to show the size..

You would be amazed at how much earth a troop of insects can move in a few hours.  Might be what caused that.

Kind of looks like burrowing animals to me. They might've been trying to surface (hence the several locations, then finally making their way through the wall into the deeper dirt)

I would definitely say some type of animal, perhaps a mole or gopher tunneling under your patio.  Possibly an insect, but it seems a bit widespread, and a lot of damage done in one night.

Possible solution for you ...  www.rodenator.com   Wink

Moles have done similar damage to my mom's patio in the past. The pavers used in your patio are almost identical to my mom's.

If you have moles you'll find long sections of lawn with tunneling furrows.

I still reckon its either folks from N Carolina (Unionists) burrowing their way out under cover, or folks from S Carolina (Confederates) burrowing their way in under cover, depending upon the state of the economy at the time, (or resurgence of the war), in either State.

If you Google "mole damage" in an image search; you'll see see identical damage to sidewalks. You'll also see the damage they do to lawns.

Sorry to nitpick Foz, but unless all of my teachers in the past 15 years have been giving me incorrect information, NC was part of the confederacy in the Civil War. Some of the locals here still call it "The War of Northern Oppression" (tongue in cheek, of course). Smiley

Nice patio, I like the rock wall.

Very unusual, I'd say.

Clear some of the dirt and see what's there.

Then, I would lift one of the stones and see what, if anything, is under it.  Ask your neighbors, maybe they'll have an idea.

If it were ants, they'd come out just by you moving the dirt a bit.  Ants would not do up so many piles.

Burrowing animals, not likely to tunnel in a straight line.  Lift a stone, that might tell.

Let us know, I'm curious.

I moved some dirt around on one of the little ones and didn't see anything. But when I get home tonight I'll move the dirt and paver from the bigger ones and let you know.
