A wealth of Argentinian music can be seen and heard here:
www.todotango.comThe list of composers is here:
http://www.todotango.com/english/biblioteca/partituras/partituras_por_autor.aspHaving studied classical guitar long ago, some of which was the 6 books of etudes by Argentine guitarist Julio Sagreras (1879-1942), composed about 1933 or so, and now studying Baroque keyboards, mostly Bach, this totally blew me away.
Published on the website above are 1,534 pieces of Argentinian sheet music in jpeg format, mostly tangos, along with the cover art for each pieces. Each piece is on average short, only two pages, and represents popular and typical sheet music of Argentina during the 20th Century.
Also, some of the pieces have an associated recording you can listen to, usually an orchestra version of the illustrated piece, dating back 50 years or more.
This is a wealth of music I've always suspected existed, but until now, remained hidden. Whereas Latin American guitar music was known to me, I have not had time to research the piano aspect of this.
The discovery came about quite by accident. I was in Specs recently with a friend who was looking for something, and he saw a pile of unclassified CD's they had gotten in. I looked randomly through the pile, and picked out a solo piano CD entitled "Tangos" containing 18 tangos by various Argentine composors, recorded by Arminda Cantores. Ms Cantores' performance is very powerful and captures the spirit of the tango brilliantly. She was was 78 when the recording was done back in 1989.
I did some online research, and came across Todotango.com.
The composers on Todotango are long gone, many of them from mid part of the 20th century. Their music has been immortalized on the web for all to see.
My life's dedication to music has included sharing new discoveries with anyone. Some of the best classical music lies in obscure places and is usually not featured on PBS. Perhaps on cable, I wouldn't know about that. So here you have something which may be completely different from your usual. Enjoy.
