I 've just installed FSX on a new system and am having a graphics problem.  The sim runs fine for 20 mins or so, when suddenly the textures go blurry and menu items grey out and dissapear.and the frame rate drops to 3-4 fps.   Also the 2d cockpit view blacks out.  If i then press Esc and then select continue flying ,it all returns to normal for a few mins before happening again . I've tried various different drivers without success. Any ideas ?      Cheers

Over heating problems, maybe?

The 68000 is quite an old card now, so have you checked the fan on the graphics card? Is it running slow? Bearing running dry? Clogged up with dust?
The 68000 will run FS 2004 reasonably well...but might struggle with the extra load of FSX!

Is the Power Supply Unit in your new set-up adequate to run all your hardware, plus FSX, without becoming overloaded, (voltage drop)?

Paul.

I'm starting to wonder if your 68000 has finally expired!

I had a 68000GT AGP card many years ago, and that one finally died on me after showing various annoying graphical anomalies on the screen!
Finally replaced it with a (low cost, low power consumption ) n-Vidia PCI-e Ge-Force 9500GT to run my FS 2004...(on a 350 Watt PSU!), fantastic!

There seems to be a limited life on Graphics Cards!

Time for a change?

Paul... Smiley...!

P.S...One thing I NEVER do, is "Overclock" anything, Processor, Graphics. If I need something better/faster, I BUY the next best!

The fact you used that video card on another system with no problems doesn't mean it can't be overheating now. As mechanical objects age, they begin under-performing, and this is true for the fan on the radiator as well. The radiator itself can get clogged by dust and other grimy trash and begin under-performing itself about bleeding heat away from the GPU.

First order of business, if you want to follow my suggestion, is to ascertain the speed of the videocard fan. Then at the very least make all the radiator go through an as thorough a cleaning as possible.

You gauge the speed of the fan in a very empiric way, touching it while it works and trying to stop it with your fingers. If it requires a certain effort to stop it, then it is hale and sound. If a feather touch is more then enough to stop it instead, the fan has reached the end of its life, it's not cooling the GPU as well as it should, and must be replaced.

Regardless from the heath of the fan, remains a good idea to use a compressed air can or a garage air compressor on the fins of the radiator, anyway.

PS
On this very PC I'm using a Ati Rage 32Mb which has about 15 years, a d on another PC I'm using another videocard that has a decade of life, both from time to time used still for 3D works. Allow me a healthy degree of skepticism hearing of limited life of a videocard. Maybe if you overclock them... or if you do not have care of their heat-sinking needs... but if well cared and not asked to do more than what they were designed for, there's no real limit.

Was I in your shoes, I'd invest in some GOOD brand UPS. It's a story that is not new to me, in places I know, where the power distribution is subjected to transient surges. Wink

Hi,     after running other software without probs, and FSX throwing up other various errors ,I uninstalled it and did a fresh clean reinstall. Now all is running as it should.  Obviously something went wrong with the original install.. Smiley

Cheers.
