Most people think that flying a plane is dangerous, except pilots because they know how easy it is.
Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it.

You know how to tell when a tomcat is out of hydraulic fluid? It stops leaking.

Now dont get me wrong I was around when Top Gun came out (flying Hornets in the Navy so thats probably why I am biased) but I will never understand why everybody loved them so.  I mean as a fleet defender they were great, but you get in a phone booth, knife fight, furball you will loose to the Hornet, Skyhawk, Falcon, Tiger II or just about anything else that was designed as a fighter.  Maybe its just the way it looks, as it is an awe inspiring beast both on the ground and in flight. The Tomcat had the great and powerful Phoenix missile system that was awsome for shooting down Bear bombers bearing down on the fleet with AS-5 Kelt missiles from a hundred miles away, but a turning fight you would better be in burners trying to extend and reenter the fight using your speed advantage. The swing wings would give away your energy state at a glance and the TF-30 engines had an nasty habit of flaming out at high AOA which they fixed when the went to the F110s on the D.  Dont get me started about the Bombcat. I honestly think that if that movie had used Hornets instead of Tomcats we would be lamenting the passing of the legacy Hornets and cheering the advent of the Rhino (Super Hornet).

Hornets Forever!

Let me make a correction, I was not a pilot, I was a back-seater on F/A-18Bs.  While the B model was used primarily fro training, we did work on suitability of a two seat version for operational use.  Most of our work was used to create the F/A-18D Hornet for the Marines.  I sat in the back and pushed buttons and was a second pair of eyeballs to watch for the Tomcat trying to sneak up on us.  Sorry for the confusion.
