Good news for those who believe in competition. Reactos (wiki info)(BBC Report)is a Russian developed PC OS designed to run windows OS programs from W2000 onwards.

For me, news about competition and more choice is always good.

Thanks Pete! I'll give it a go and report back. I'll try the live cd version first. I'll say this, the .iso for the install is only 51.3 MB. I'm really interested to see what it can do!

If anyone else is interested, I had a hard time getting the download links from their site to work. That Sourceforge page they use is Here

**EDIT**
Before anyone jumps on me for criticizing the REACTOS team, let me just say this... I KNOW this is an alpha release! I'm not trying to make more of that than it is. I'm only going to post what I observe, good or bad.

That being said...
First thing I noticed is that on one of my systems anyway, it didn't like my optical mouse. Standard ps2 ball and roller type mouse seems ok. I am very impressed at how closely ReactOS looks and behaves like Windows! (So much so in fact, if I didn't know any better, I'd say there was shared code there somewhere...) More to come.

I doubt it. Competition, including free competition, has been around for a while. Microsoft even develop programs for Mac OS, so it's not as if they're too bothered about the competition. Also, Vista was fine, 99% of the problems were with the users or the third party developers  Wink

I think the market is pretty much settled. People are happy with what they have. I don't think there is much room for others to come in... Even if they're offering free products. The main reason we use what we use is because it is OEM. It's purely a fuss to change it when it's already there. I doubt PC shops will promote something free when they could make a margin on selling a payware OS that is standard with those computers.

It always amazes me when people follow without question.

Look at apple users - Apple exercise full control over their market and people go for it en mass.

The positive side of me thinks these people are just slow on the uptake not to realize that buying into a controlled market is a bad thing! It's like the other side of communism but almost meets in the middle. Sure Apple may have a great product -- but in the long term the competition (like Samsung ... et al)  will win because people want choice and the world's greatest developments and inventions are NEVER made within a closed or controlled community.

Let's hope M$ knows this for the new MS Flight! I will be very happily SURPRISED if they don't follow apple for the short term, grab the cash now - with a controlled 'central market' approach. If they do, simviation will certainly not support therm and will go all out for free development of digital flight simulation - without control!  Cool

Nope -- I was at a thing recently where the word was 'windows is yesterday. Traditional PC's are yesterday. Tablets and even newer forms of computing suich as holographic shinedowns from a holographic strip are where it's at' ....

To say people are happy with what they have -- ....  Roll Eyes ... please open your eyes -- do you think evolution is over? You might end up as one of those guys who lived through the 30's and still wonder why steam trains weren't all we needed.

Alas I think M$ are believing their own press, that way madness lies.
The new Windows simulating version of Linux is on its way shortly. Needless to say I'll be seeing how FSX runs on that...

This is one of those many things where varying viewpoints are both correct and wrong. machineman9's statement is valid in the aspect of what's available. Ozzy's product of mention is an example. I never learned that Linux existed until after I had a working computer with MS OS98 installed and had online access (my first computers were never online); how many computers are retailed (or, even, produced) with Linux already installed? How many outlets provide the option of "free" OS software (the only Linux-based program I ever found in the off-line market wasn't free).
However, Pete, this doesn't make your point invalid: Most agreed that Sony's old Beta format was better than the VHS format -- but Sony wanted exclusive rights on 'their' format. Both forms were available in the sale market but, because VHS wasn't restricted to a specific manufacturer, its unit and software availability greatly increased, reduced its prices and resulted in choking the Beta machine from the scene.
There is another factor that availability plays in the market, the 'perception' of reliability (as long as it, for the most part, works, don't fix it). Many consumers aren't that aware and won't even dare the thought that something else might work as well or better in their machine. Why 'endanger' its operation by installing a control program that wasn't native to it; this would be equivelent to pulling the engine out of your new car just because someone gave you a free one of the same size (similar or better specs to be proven to that consumer -- they go with the flow unless something better is readily available); many alternates are out there for many things but many still heed the manufacturer's 'use only our products for the safety of your machine and its warranty'.

Steam trains? All I know is that I can't find a local blacksmith or wainright to repair the old wagon. It's costing more and more for the upkeep of the horse team; I can't figure out how to effectively hitch the team up to these newfangled covered wagons -- a new version of which costs way more than our family homestead did, circa 1900 -- even by extending the reins to come in through each side window; whoever came up with the idea of these monstrosities was truly daft.
