Hi There Folks

I used to play with X-Plane 9 on the ipad and found it easy to take-off but I soon found myself aborting in flight as I did not know the rest. I was just curious as a newbie to just fly a plane.

Anyway, I don't have an ipad anymore and bought myself MS Flight Simulator X for Windows 7. I will be starting on the beginner tutorials.

But is there any good tutorial out there for me to peruse. I am using a pc keyboard and mouse. Will my experience be easier if I use a joystick controller?

A joystick that has a built in throttle would be a brilliant first step.

For example, the Saitek Cyborg X (sometimes called F.L.Y) has dual throttle controls, which would make it perfect for multi-engined aircraft, or the two throttle controls link together for single engines. As far as I know, it runs for about £40.

Flight Simulator X has many tutorials, and it is worth while going through them and also playing the missions.

One of the best things to do, to learn to fly in the game, is to play the game like it's real life... Learn on small aircraft (the built in Cessna 172, or look around the downloads page on Simviation for a Cessna 152, or Piper PA-28, or something simple). Learn to fly in aircraft like that before moving to the big jets and faster things.

If you think about it, a real world pilots license takes about 50 hours to accomplish for many people. If you even spend 5-10 hours just practising flying (using the radio, navigating, landing, takeoffs, etc) then you'll be ready to progress to larger planes.

After a while, learn to navigate using the map (not the GPS), navigate with the radio (Youtube has many tutorial videos), learn to use autopilot, etc. Soon you'll be at a suitable level to make an achieveable, but suitably realistic, flight wherever you wish to travel to.

Furthermore, welcome to SimV and feel free to ask all you need. Though remember that there are subforums dedicated to each Flight Simulator game if you have a game-specific question.

Ya definatly need some sort of controller.. I really need to get a joystick, and im using xbox 360 controller.

360 controller isnt too bad the way its set up with the game but a joystick that has a throttle or 2 is by far the best thing to use with the game.

or even better yet a joystick with throttle, mixture, and prop controls seperatly, and rudder pedals, but thats a lot more then just a joystick.

I am somwhere I don't know where I am!!!&&

get a joystick and throttle combo, then go through "LEARNING CENTER" before you even start to think about downloading planes.  go through the first 9 at least twice.  This will give you the basics of flight, and how and what to do.  You can skip 10 & 11 unless you want to fly helos, but I would save those for later.  Jump to 12 and then go from there.

DEFINITELY get a joy stick- even a cheap Microsoft one if you don't want to spring for the more expensive ones.

You'll go NUTS tring to fly & adjust flight with keyboard commands.
Good Luck- let us know if you need help (which you will).
