So my boys were playing on the computer when suddenly I hear a loud "Pop" followed by stunned silence. There then followed some whispering and then a long cry of "paaaaaapaaaa" very closely followed by, "we did not do anything........"

Closer examination showed a popped capacitor, even close examination indicated a odd smell from the power pack. Anyway the dam thing is toast. So I went out and bought a nice new laptop to replace the old and very dead desktop. I have removed the hard drives, I have a converter box to make them external, however I have a dvd in the old reader. How can I get the disk out without power and without destroying the player??

Pop out the DVD-ROM from the laptop and disassemble. Normally 4-5 screws hold it together Wink
Some you have to pop the front facia off first!

Thanks Mark, but the disk is in an old desktop tower type DVD player. Still the same process?

Also can you tell me where I can find the location of the address book file in Outlook express. I need to export my email addresses and not forgetting my bookmarks for Firefox??

Thanks

Matt

There should be a small hole, about 1mm diam., on the front of the dvd drive, below the tray. Insert a pin of some sort into the hole and push straight in. This should release the tray.

To find you Outlook folder do a search (including hidden files and folders) for Outbox. It'll soon show you where it is, then copy all the folders (this is if you use POP3 in your mail).
The address book is a .wab file Wink Just do another search with *.wab (including hidden files and folders).

I can't count how many times I did this to my CD drive to get Vista install disk/Ubuntu live boot CD/UBCD in and out. Tongue
