Most people think that flying a plane is dangerous, except pilots because they know how easy it is.
Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it.

My cousin e-mailed me this morning that he was preparing for the storm -- and he's 50 to 60 miles further inland on a hill some ways away from the Connecticut River. More likely, I'm almost next to a lake that I'd more apt be in.
There's a bigger concern for those of you further south who'll take the brunt of it -- much of its punch should be gone by the time it would get here, not that we won't have the problem with power lines and snapped tree branches.

The storm is now 200 miles directly east of South Florida.

It looks like we just got one of the heavier outer bands - 6 hours of rain, a little over 2½ inches, and 30 MPH winds.  It's clearing now.  Still cloudy but no more rain or wind.

A bad day at golf is better than a good day at work.

PGA Tour shortens The Barclays from 72 to 54 holes

Quote:
EDISON, N.J. – The PGA Tour announced Friday that The Barclays, the first of four tournaments in the FedExCup Playoffs, will be shortened from a 72-hole event to 54 holes due to the impending threat of Hurricane Irene.

Players who make the 36-hole cut today will tee of beginning at 7 a.m. on Saturday at Plainfield Country Club. The forecast, however, is not ideal — there is a threat of thunderstorms in the morning, with heavier rain moving in around 2 p.m.

Hurricane? New Yorkers soak up the beach

Quote:
More than 200,000 New Yorkers are under orders to flee a once-in-a-century hurricane, but many in the famed City That Never Sleeps are brushing aside danger -- and heading to the beach.

Hours after Mayor Mike Bloomberg ordered the evacuation from the low-lying Rockaway Beach, the sun-kissed coastline was packed with sunbathers and surfers as city dwellers took the dire warnings about Hurricane Irene in stride.

Roberto Luzuriaga, who was making a brisk business selling Italian Ice desserts to swimmers straight off the sand, echoed the views of many when he said that authorities' warnings were at times self-serving.

"It definitely is a concern, but sometimes things are blown out of proportion. Sometimes the people who make the calls just want to save their asses," said Luzuriaga, who is still debating whether to leave his nearby home.

Obama cuts vacation short for hurricane

The eye is still quite far away, but it's settled into a continuous downpour here, with strong gusty winds. Not worried- the place is secure enough, and I have plenty of beer.

If you have beer and ice you will be fine,

These things are overblown media hypes.  They want to keep you glued to the TV.

The worst hurricane I ever encountered (40 year South Florida resident) was Wilma when the electricity went out for 5 days.

On day 5 I heard (battery powered radio) that FEMA was giving out ice.  It didn't matter much since everything in the freezer was gone.  I got a couple of bags to chill some beer and the electricity came on an hour later.
