Well guys, looks like we're gonna get something from this.  So here we go again.  About Thursday for this.

At least we get a big heads up, so prep time is big.  It's been what, since 2005 for the last, two in a row back then, neither too strong.

I've been through every hurricane that hit the Miami area since 1954, of course Hurricane Andrew, 1992, right at this time of year, was really devastating, but it raised awareness, so everyone preps up nowadays.

From 1965 to 1995 when Andrew hit, there was almost nothing, except for Hurricane David, which went up the east coast of Florida sort of like Irene is projected to do.

Hurricane David took out some really nice beachfront up near Ft Pierce (about 200 miles north) so I saw when I went up there soon after.

Hurricane Andrew was terrible, the eye passed about 20 miles south of me.  It was a small, fast moving storm which lasted only 3 hours on the pass through, but due to extremely high winds, caused extreme damage everywhere.  It seemed to come out of nowhere and there was very little advance prep time.  During the storm I would spend some time looking out and listening through an open window on the leeward side, it's unbelievable to see and hear 150 mph winds just going through everywhere.

My house has remained completely undamaged through all these storms.  Just pick up the yard, a monumental task (37,000 sq ft) for just one person, me, and that's it.

This year, I'm more ready than usual, had the huge ficus cut back, cut some trees down that were in striking distance to the house, and I trimmed the two huge poincianas in the back up to 16 ft off the ground.

Wish us luck.  Still, better a hurricane than other natural disasters.  We all see them coming from a long way off.  Usually.

Hurricane Irene now is forecast to strengthen into a major hurricane with winds of about 115 mph when it draws near Florida on Thursday.

The good news: The projected path has been shifted to the east, keeping the core over the Bahamas and more than 150 miles off South Florida’s coast and more than 100 miles off the Central Florida coast.

That still could be close enough to bring some wind and rain to Florida during the day on Thursday and into Friday morning, the National Weather Service in Miami said.

“Despite the eastward shifting, the system has the potential be so strong and large that we could still see tropical storm conditions, along with squally weather,” said meteorologist Pablo Santos. “All it would take would be minor jog the west, and that could bring tropical storm winds right over us.”

I wish you luck. The only hurricane I've been in was hurricane Belle around late 1975 or early '76' when I was stationed at Cherry Point MCAS. It was an awesome experience to see  heavy rains blowing sideways at high speeds. Not so awesome was the damage Belle caused.

Most people think that flying a plane is dangerous, except pilots because they know how easy it is.
Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it.

I'm not on the Gulf Coast, but close enough that major ones have caused a lot of damage here. I went through Camille, Frederick, and Katrina, as well as others,

but those three all caused significant damage, especially Katrina. Good luck.  Smiley

No hurricane hit while I was near the Gulf (no matter what you want to put to my charge}. I did survive one typhoon while stuck in the Pacific (well, above it but not by much). Squads were sent around knocking the potential coconut missiles from their branches.
They put me on charge of quarters at our remote site, about eight miles from the base. The power shack was separate from the operations vans; when the main power went out, I was unable to see in the pounding rain and ran until I smacked into the side of the shack, then felt around for the door. After starting the emergency generators, I ran back toward the vans (or so I thought) until my shin smacked into the front post of the step railing -- if I'd missed it I may have joined the suicidal WW2 Japanese at the bottom of the 600' cliff some ways beyond.
I was soaked when I returned to the base, quite well expecting to dry off and get some rest -- everything was damp and two inches of water covered the barracks floor.
Ah, and those were the days I thought I'd never miss...

I was still living in Picayune, MS when Katrina hit, that was most certainly a life altering event.

From the projected path as it stands, if it does turn East, it will pretty much head straight for us.   THANKS!!!!! NOT!!!  Tongue Tongue Cry Cry

It has shifted a bit east, but now the Carolinas are in the center.  I do remember Hurricane Hugo, so good luck up there, be careful.   Even after it passes, we'll all be watching the news.

Oh boy, I'm not sure that hurricane is the only natural disaster going on over here on the east coast!  I just expeirienced a miniature earthquake over here!  It wasn't enough to do any damage that I know of, and it only lasted about 5 seconds, but it sure scared the heck outa me! Shocked

I wonder if the hurricane and the earthqauke are somehow connected. Huh

Oh boy, just found out, it was centered in Louisa county and was a 5.8 on the richter scale.  And also, the center was right near a nuclear power plant!

Been keeping my eye on this hurricane, but it looks as if the gulf coast will be spared! Good luck to all the east coasters!
