I hope the initial reports are correct. We're not having a good season in England with airshows this year.
I wonder if they we're displaying at Shoreham, in which case Doug will probably have more info later when he gets home....

Our annual show at KBJC, Jeffco(Rocky Mountain Metro) in Broomfield, CO is the 26th, 27th & 28th of Aug. The last incident here was in '97.

If The British continue having airshows like this, Why aren't politicians being put as pilots? Would make good publicity though
Most people think that flying a plane is dangerous, except pilots because they know how easy it is.
Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it.

The only consolation is that it happened after the display. Not good at all. RIP.

We'll have to wait for the crash report but initial commentary sounds like the aircraft suffered a failure and Flt. Lt. Egging gave his life to avoid others being hurt

The Red Arrows have never displayed at Shoreham. Very sorry to hear the news.

In the bigger picture of this tragedy, it was rather lucky then that any failure happened when it did and not in a formation or synchro pair manoeuvre for example, thought I realise that the Reds have contingency manoeuvres for such times, however..........

Potentially could be. That's one of the bigger dangers of single engine jets, particularly near coastal locations, where the birds tend to be bigger.

He would not be the first to have bird in the engine and have bird shatter the canopy and enter the cockpit or even just the cockpit. That could explain why he ejected at the stage he did, possibly severe disorientation or semi consciousness.

That said, if it is a birdstrike, it's relatively (in the circumstances, and no consolation to family and friends) good news, as it's a known risk as opposed to a technical failure of some description.

The engineer in me wanted to say exactly that. However being ex-serviceman and having worked on aircraft for the last 24 years, my viewpoint does not always sit with what people want to hear at such times as this, so I keep my mouth closed.

I've said from the very start I would expect the outcome to be a birdstrike. It's a shame that its happend, and it seems like the pilots made the ultimate sacrifice to save others.
The question would be, what radio traffic was passed between red 4 and the team from point of failure to the crash.

It'll all be on tape. I suspect very little, if any.

I dont expect there will be much either. but I'd be surprised if he wasn't able to get something out. Then again if this has happend a few hundred feet up, I doubt his first thoughts were to hit the mic button, if he's worried about getting away from other people.

Well. This is not a lucky year for aviation
