In theory that's a good strategy, but a CH47 has to fold its blades to fit in the back of a C5, our largest cargo bird, let alone open them up and have them spinning for an aerial insertion.

Not much choice in much of those areas of high terrain in Afghan.  Those combat loaded choppers don't fly that high, especially in high altitude terrain.  They have to utilize valleys.

I just thought of a probably very stupid idea. put one of those helicopters in the backs of one of those big, high-flying cargo planes.  when close to the target, have the cargo plane desend to an altitude where the helicopters would be able to gain lift, open the rear cargo door, push the helicopters out with engines running and if possible rotors spinning.  That way, they only have to make the trip back and they hopefully won't be able to get ready for an ambush at the site.
I know.  Stupid idea, but it's an idea and I'm not military! Embarrassed Lips Sealed

Or they could put agm-65s or MK-84s for self defence. Cause clearly 50.cal guns are'nt good enough.  Grin

Most people think that flying a plane is dangerous, except pilots because they know how easy it is.
Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it.

The rotors would snap off.  Good fantasy, terrible idea Tongue

How about an Osprey?

It might not work but it would be a good way to get rid of them.

Just make sure everyone on board gets a parachute.

Remember, more than half the mission is to protect the civilians, not blow them to ten buck two!

This is the other place: it was named for a fellow who encamped by the Nile, lazing in his lounge chair. He had ten buck teeth and was known by the locals, in their own accent, as Ten Bucktoo'.
