Hello all,

I've had this aircraft for ages now and never flown it. i once got an engine started, and got halfway to the runway only to find it had set on fire!

tonight i printed out all the documents, had them next to me, went through the tutuorial step by step, and .... frustration!! Ive had about 7 attempts tonight, and wasted a small proportion of my life lol!

in short the checklist for starting up, according to the maual is as follows, and

here is what I am doing:

  • attach GPU
    (ok)
  • switch on batteries
    (ok)
  • switch on GPU
    (ok)
  • switch on master Avionics
    (ok)
  • set condition lever to taxi?
    (ok)
  • set powers using F1?
    (ok)
  • switch fuel pumps on
    (ok)
  • avionics back off again?
    (ok)
  • (should gens be on or off at this point? im guessing off?)
  • master start - set to left
    (ok)
  • press start button for left engine
(ok - engine spools up, appears to work for a minute or two, no smoke/fire etc. engine temps read ok - EGT is around 700 ish - does not exceed 770 as warned about)
  • switch generators on
(at this point, i'm not getting a voltage reading for generators. it reads 0.0... (doesnt look ok to me)
  • disconnect GPU from aircraft, switch GPU off on overhead
(due to 0.0 voltage from generator 1, not ok)
  • switch off fuel pumps
    (at this point engine stops)
  • turn on master avionics again
(kinda pointless as my engines have stopped!!)
  • head to virtual pub, rethink career!
    (not ok!)

ok so any help here would be most appreciative, I know a few hardcore simmers out there own this aircraft. im not worried about pre-flight checks, as the flight starting up in is cold and dark cockpit, and ive gone through the checklists and they seem to match the requirements as stated in the PMDG doccument checklists.

All I want to do is A) start the engines, and B) get in the air without setting fire to important stuff!!

once I'm in the air, i'll be happy!

Thanks in advance,

Deano  Smiley

Ahahah! Sorry it's nervous, I'm in the same boat as you. I need to practice with this aircraft so I don't set fire to my engines every time. I'll be following your post with great interest...

Maybe this PMDG support forum topic can help. Quote:

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.          Igor Sikorsky

You know....you can just rip up a to-do list.

Your problem might be the Start Locks.  One at a Time, put your props into the Beta Range, and toggle the Unfeather switch for that side to engage the Start Locks.  Then you can start the engines.  Don't forget to remove the Start locks before takeoff.  If I leave the Jetstream for more than a week, it fools me every time.
