I'm trying to install the FS KBT P-3 Orion in FS9, and it won't install on a 64-bit version of Vista using the auto installer.  I tried to extract the files, but its a mess of .bmp's and everything else... too complicated for me to assemble the aircraft manually.

Does anyone know how to make a 32 bit installer work in 64 bit Windows?  I tried to google this answer, but no luck...

Thanks,

Wade

An aircraft, when unzipped in a temp folder from an installer, usually is composed by a "Aircraft" folder, inside which there's the main folder(s) that define the plane, and must be moved inside FS9/Aircraft/.

Then usually you have a "gauges" folder which content you must pour into FS9/Gauges/.

And sometimes an "Effects" folder, which content you have to move into FS9/Effects/.

Sometimes, based on the plane's complexity, there may be some other folders that have no match under FS9's folder. Those folders, unless you can be sure they are not of any consequence, must be moved completely under FS9/, to be sure (you can try and remove them momentarily, after the plane works well, to see if they're needed or not, and eventually delete them definitively).

All stray graphical files are simply showcase and are not strictly needed for the plane. Nothing too bad. You only need to pay a little attention to what you do. Wink

There is no such a thing as overkill. Only unworthy targets.

Thanks for the reply... however I know how to install an aircraft manually.  This is not the problem with the KBT P-3.

It's strange with this one... it's almost like a zipped installer... if that makes any sense.  When I click to run it, its says it will not work on a 64bit version of windows.  If I extract all the files into a blank folder.... it lumps them all together... bmp's, Aircraft.cfg, wav's, .air's, guages.... and everything else.  I tried to make my own model, texture, sound, etc. folders, but it's too confusing.

Can you provide a link to the package in question?

I for one would like to check it out.

I can't seen to make a link work properlly....  Tongue

Search P-3C Orion on flightsim.com or avsim... it's the P-3C / CP-140 Aurora by FS KBT.

Would it be this one? http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=p-3c_2&categoryId=&filename=Y

I tried one of the KBT auto-installers. It's not the familiar ClickTeam utility & seems to be more suited to WinXP. When you run the installer the files are first extracted to a Temp folder in C:\Documents and Settings before the actual installation process begins. Note the options are greyed out & the Extract Directory path cannot be changed at this point.
...

When that's done you can then direct the install path to anywhere you wish in the usual way.
...

I suspect this might cause problems on Win7 which uses different default directories. Not sure if anything can be done about it.

PS. This might help. http://www.byteblocks.com/post/2009/08/10/Documents-and-Settings-folder-in-Windo...

I downloaded another instance of the aircraft here:http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=lockheed_ep-3e.zip&categoryId=&...-lockheed_ep-3e.zip. It has the same '2-stage' KBT auto-installer as illustrated by Hagar.

After you manually ' extract all the files into a blank folder'....amongst the files you should find an 'INSTALL.exe' file. Running this executes the second step of the install process, as in the second screen posted by Hagar.

I pointed it to a temporary folder for manual install and it created the proper folders and placed all files in their proper locations.

Note: Worked fine for me as I run XP-32. You may still have compatibility issues in Vista-64. I believe you can get around this by configuring 'compatibility mode' for the 'INSTALL.exe' file...

Thanks Dave!  Got it to work!

I never played around with the compatibility mode before...  actually i didn't even know it was there.

Here's what I did, for anyone else who wants this aircraft....  very simple fix...

These are the files that come in the original folder once you have dowloaded the A/C.

...

Right-click on the installer, P-3C_GMAX_FS9, go to Properties, click Compatibility tab, check the box under Compatibility mode, choose your OS (I selected XP, even though I have Vista.... Vista is not an option in the drop-down menu).

...

Then run the installer again, and it should work.

Cool
