And the first manned Earth orbit, BTW... the Soviets were still making huge strides at that time.

Strictly speaking, Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space (if you don't count all of the dead cosmonauts that the Soviet Union covered up) but he did not complete the first space flight.  Alan Shepard did.
