can anyone please help with this problem, its driving me insane,, have searched google for anyone else asking for help on this topic, to no avail?!?!?!? i think the prob my be linked to a small symbol that appears 'for a few seconds' above the taskbar icons to inform me ive just pressed to the numlock key?!?!?? hmmmm..

im running on a dell n5010 laptop, intel core i3, m370 2.4gb processor, 3gb ram, windows 7, dunno bout the graphics card.

this is most probably a application that is installed on your laptop to notify you that you have pressed the num lock key or caps lock ect...
i would first start by having a look at the programs that are installed
this will most probably be listed under a name as "dell notify" or "dell **something**"

i know what your onabout as my acer laptop does the same red text in a white box
i would try searching google for a program called "quick startup"
install and run the program and un-tick all the boxes appart from your antivirus, ctfmon.exe and any graphics card apps
then reboot or log out then back in again
this should solve your problem
if not i will have a look on my laptop to see if i can remove my one

thanks for the reply, ive just downloaded quick startup and disabled all but antivirus but still got the prob, there wasnt really much to disable to be honest.. ive just tried another approach by re assigning the keyfunction within fsx from numberlock to another key but fsx persists on using numlock to change the number pad function?!.. also tried setting windows 7 to classic theme but the same symbol appears 'number 9 inside a padlock'... any other ideas would be much appreciated.

Just out of curiosity, does it do this with FSX in "windows view" (with the frame), and in "full screen" (No frame), and do other applications minimize when you have them in windows view?

JOY!!! ive just sorted it.. i ran msconfig and disabled bluetooth!?!? dunno what thats got to do with it but saw it mentioned on a thread i found in google after rewording my question ''thanks radio homer for putting me on the right track with the 'dell notify' comment''..

it was only minimising in full screen mode boikat, but when in window mode the keys would stop working for a few seconds, very strange.

depending on WHY you would be hitting the Num Lock button, and what it is mapped to in Flight in............ QUIT PUSHING THE BUTTON or delete the key assignment.

for me, any assignment that deals with the RUDDER, gets deleted. I use TeamSpeak with my VA's, and INS (Insert) key is my Push-to-talk key.  In the sim it is mapped to something with the rudder trim.   I DONT WANT KEYBOARD RUDDER TRIM.  If i want to yaw left or right, then i will twisk my joystick and make it yaw left or right.

Pilots are in the cockpit for a reason.... FLY THE PLANE and leave the computer out of it.

peawack's problem was nothing to do with key assignments
this was to do with a piece of software that's built into his laptops operating system.
this problem has now been solved if you would have read his last post

i read EVERY post. and while I also have a laptop that has WIN7 (sp1) i never have or had this problem even with BLUETOOTH turned on. as a matter of fact, i never turned it off.

so therefor, my comments still stand as written.

check your key assignments and find out what NUM LOCK goes to. If you dont need it, then remove the assigned key.  ---- as it stands. NUM LOCK is not assigned to anything in FSX to begin with.

my next question is, what are you trying to use NUM LOCK for?

Num Lock is used to toggle between the keypad function of shifting view angles in VC, 2d cockpit views and external views, and "7" and "1" controlling Elevator Trim and  (I think) Stab Trim.
