Following advice, I uninstalled FSX and tried to reinstall it in a non default destination. This is what happened.

FSX uninstalled fine.
I cleaned the registry out rebooted the PC then tried to install a clean copy of FSX in C:/FSX (there is a game in a similar directory) but most of the game installed in C:/program files x86/Microsoft games/FSX and some if it installed in C:/FSX, but before it finished the installation I got an error message
error no 0x80040702. Description: Failed to load DLL: Gameuxinstall helper. Setup will now terminate.

FSX would not uninstall as there was no installation exe? or something similar, so I had no choice but to manually delete it.
I cleaned the registry again,  rebooted and tried again, this time allowing FSX to install in the default destination and lo and behold got the same error message.  Cry

Anyone any ideas???????

Not sure why you should have this problem. You might like to read this. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968365

Please tell me if it helps.

Yeah I saw that last night, I 'googled' the problem, but was not comforted by the fact that others have experienced the same problem.
I got as far a typing msconfig and hit enter and the PC went to sleep?????????????????? I woke it up again and it opened to the page where I left (not surprisingly) so I tried again with the same result, so I concluded that wouldn't be much use to me.
Incidentally, it is not a typo, the error message did say uxinstall, not uninstall

I suspect I have two problems, one with installing (the error message) and one installing in the non default destination.

I understand the program file x86 folder is for 32 bit programs and to use 64 bit (I have Windows 7 64 bit) the PC need a minimum of 4GB RAM I have only 2GB RAM at the moment, but I do have another 4GB on order, could this have any bearing FSX installing in the default destination even though I specified another destination?

you will need to turn on "SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS" options in order to find it....

but go to C:/Users/(user name here)/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/FSX  --- you MUST delete this entire folder when you uninstall FSX, or you will have problems trying to get it to reinstall.

This folder contains the FSX.CFG file, that depending on other problems with the sim, you can delete then just start FSX as you normally would and things will be fixed.  Keep in mind that ALL settings will be returned to default status as they were out of the box.(if you have added textures/airplanes/programs they will be safe excect in the case of an uninstall which removes 95% of everything -- saved files and folder will be left behind if you tell it to.)

Thanks for this bit of advice.  I had a look and found there were some remnants left over and have removed them. The only bit left where you suggested I look was a folder with one file in it and XML file named DLL.

I had a trawl round Program files/program filesx86 and the C drive and found the odd bit left over from the failed reinstallations and removed therse as well. It would appear the most of what was left behind came for the acceleration installation

All I have left now are the few add on aircraft, gauges and effects in a desktop folder.

Having been dilligent in removing all traces of the old installation of FSX I tried to reload it again and guess what? total failure, exactly the same problem.

There must be an answer to the problem, I will have to continue the search
