If I understand correctly, you have difficulty using the hat switch due to a damaged thumb. You might want to look at TrackIR. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the heads up on the TrackIR, I can see it might be useful and might investigate further when I can afford it.

It's a real pain (literally) not having a body that works, that is why I can't fly for real anymore as well. But that serves me right for having fun when I was younger.
