Hi all,
Sorry to bring this thread up again: I recently flew and landed the DH Beaver, just after landing and I tried turning to dock but found I'd no rudder.
My rudders were not lowered: Now my question is that if this Beaver wasn't intended to be an amphibian why would it have rudders that could be raised?
Does the real Beaver that is not amphibian have water rudders that can be raised and lowered?
regards
Steve
May the Mynd be with you.
So far my number of landings either passenger or pilot equal my number of takeoffs, but that is due to change

Yes, without them you would have no directional control at taxi speeds due to the lack of airflow passing the rudder on the tail.
cheers,
Joe

Somwhere there is a thread where Doug (Flying Trucker), who has real world experience (lots of it) with many types including float and amphibian, explained this. It has to do with taxi speed. If I remember correctly, when you get up on the 'step', faster than a taxi you would use around the dock area, as well as takeoff, you don't want the rudders down. But at slower speeds you need them.
Though the Piper Cub float version only has one rudder, it too is designed to be raised.
If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.

On floats... water rudders up just before you begin your takeoff run, and rudders down on landing once you slow to taxi speed.
Cheers,
