Money For Nothing, is being banned for radio in Canada. Read the comments after the article, but please, if you have a reply, no political comments or biggotry.
  http://ca.news.yahoo.com/dire-straits-money-nothing-censored-broadcast-panel-rul...

The comments below the article are coming in so fast that the one I read is pages in the background so I copy/paste it below..
The point of the use of the word "@#$%" in the song was to be offensive, in a working class way. It is used to ironically reveal and deplore the stupdity of the speaker for using the word in the first place. It is a not a word used to deplore homosexuality, but to deplore biggotry and ignorance.

Are you trying to tell me Sting, one of the most public and left wing leaning recording artists in the hostory of the UK was willingly involved in the recording of a song that was **intended to be offensive to Lesbians and gays?** Or is it just possible that the entire point of the song lyrics was the self-evident use of irony?

If you actually care to listne to the entire song, it's all ABOUT the misplaced values of the ignorant blue collar workman who narrates the song and demonstrates his ignorance. The song is all about the fact that the narrator has **no clue** as to the real work that goes into be a recording artist. That's the entire *point* of the song.

The lyrics are from a 25 year old song, released before s. 15 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in Canada was used to recognize protection form discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The positive attitude in Canada towards LGBT and same-sex marriage does not FLY in the face of the lyrics of the song; to the contrary, the positive attitude was SHAPED and ENCOURAGED by the irony in the lyrics of this song. This is PRO gay song by belittling biggotry; it is not a negative song.

The generation that hummed along to this song when it was released is the SAME generation that supported same-sex marriage and changed the world.

I am utterly stunned, STUNNED, that this is not self-evident to the CBSC.

Read the Lyrics you morons!

"Now look at them yo-yo's that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on the MTV
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Money for nothin' and your chicks for free

Now that ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Lemme tell ya them guys ain't dumb
Maybe get a blister on your little finger
Maybe get a blister on your thumb

We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these color TV's

See the little @#$% with the earring and the makeup
Yeah buddy that's his own hair
That little @#$% got his own jet airplane
That little @#$% he's a millionaire

Gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
Gotta move these color TV's

I shoulda learned to play the guitar
I shoulda learned to play them drums
Look at that mama, she got it stickin' in the camera
Man we could have some

And he's up there, what's that? Hawaiian noises?
Bangin' on the bongos like a chimpanzee
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Get your money for nothin' get your chicks for free"

Just more governmental idiocy. I bet Mark Knopfler is p***ed. They should read the article Wikipedia has on the song, which includes an interview with Mark, which, as I understand it, confirms what you have posted.

I have been a Mark Knopfler fan for a long time. He's one of the good guys. He has to be for Chet Atkins to take to him like he did. Besides, what about all the 'langauge' used in rap and hip hop? I don't know if you even

have those in Canada, but if you do and they allow them, then they should allow this.

Yes Rap, HipHop and other genre far worse than this song exsist here. I have all of Dire Straights music and love it. I am as stunned as the author of the comment I posted. Now, I'm sliding my headphones on and going to listen to some Dire Straights.  Sad

Even Mark Twains classic, Huckleberry Finn, is getting spit polished for todays world..
Quote..
"The panel reportedly noted that Money for Nothing would be acceptable for broadcast if suitably edited (bleeped).

This is the second big news story about the sanitizing/censorship of culture this month. A much larger item pertained to the Mark Twain classic Huckleberry Finn."

Censorship of airplay is one thing. Next, they will be taking CDs and movies off the shelves, and shutting down web sites. Cover your eyes and ears George Orwell.

There is already an edited version of Money for Nothing, I have the CD, they take out the entire verse in question, matter of fact I didn't even know that verse was in the song until several years later when I heard it on XM...

I just became aware, this morning, that this has been censored in the USA for some time already. It still shocks me that some of this Gangsta rap remains untouched. The opinion on this side of the border is that this will set a bad precident. Being that one person in 35 million complained after 25 years.  Tongue Some of William Shakespeares work is also banned from schools.
On the bright side, this publicity is something Dire Straights couldn't have payed for.

We seem to be on course to rewrite history due to a small narrow minded few. History cannot be changed, only glossified to make it sound nicer. I would rather hear or read the unglorified truth and realize that in that day, that is the way things were.

Yeah, I'm beginning to suspect that a lot of history was written to pull the wool over our eyes and the truth forever a secret, at least where possible, (meaning no witnesses).

They used to say the victors write the history books.
