doesn't matter if no thumbnail, you can create one with utility found here at simviation.

That's true enough but we're getting way off-topic. The file that Denis is having problems with is a payware aircraft created specifically for FSX SP2. I haven't got the aircraft myself but I'm sure it has the necessary thumbnails.

As I said earlier, I suspect the cause of his problem is that the FSX default location is different on the 64-bit version of Win7. The aircraft will be somewhere on his system if he does a search for it.

I've had no problem installing FSX aircraft (payware) into the FSX program. This Texan problem came after I successfully installed three other aircraft from the same developer moments before. It had a terrific holiday sale.  I've  e mailed Iris (the developer)  asking for assistance but so far no response but I understand this aussie company has a good rep. .

Denis. Did you try my suggestion?

IRIS has an excellent reputation. Read the instructions in the wizard carefully. It's possible the install path varies on some of their products.

PS. If you manually typed the path it's quite possible you made a mistake. In this case it would install to the wrong location which would explain the problem.

Is there a thumbnail in the texture folder? The aircraft will not show up if there isn't.

Sorry but that's not correct. I've successfully installed lots of FS9 aircraft to FSX. They all work perfectly without thumbnails.

I believe the IRIS Texan is a "true-FSX" aircraft with all the bells & whistles. http://www.irisfss.com/product-pro-t6a.php

They may work but, they don't show up in the select aircraft menu Smiley

Hovering there, I've chased the shouting wind along and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air.

If that's the case how would I know if they work or not? Tongue

Well, I'll be damned.
When I install an aircraft with no thumbnail it's there but, no picture. It's hard to explain. The aircraft will be there but, it's picture will be of an aircraft that was already there. The new aircraft (without a thumbnail)will take the place of an existing aircraft and use it's thumbnail.It works perfectly once it's selected. Also, every aircraft down the list from the new one is shifted over one spot so that the one you click on isn't the one you get.
How did you take a shot of your aircraft selection menu? I could show you.
I know this isn't helping at all with DenisH's problem but, it kind of sounds like there might be a problem with my sim Huh

I've seen this mentioned here before. Not had the problem myself on two different computers. Perhaps it's a Vista/Win7 thing as I'm still on good old XP. I understand it's caused by the ui_xxxx entries in Aircraft.cfg rather than missing thumbnails. Note the FSX default entries are in quotes like this;

ui_manufacturer="Cessna"
ui_type="C172SP Skyhawk"
ui_variation=" Blue, Gold"

For the screenshots I use the old-fashioned Alt + Print Screen method.

Chuck: Apologies unnecessary. Your posts were far more interesting than mine.

HAGAR: I  followed the Texan installer prompts on the first tries. Then I noticed that [x86] was not in the destination and manually  added that with equally fruitless results. .

Speaking of fruitless results, I am sorry I ever installed Win 7. Like the Biblical job, I now suffer from three afflictions. I can't install my new Texan.  I have lost track of "Setup exe" and, thirdly, my CD Room drive has disappeared altho it still works. I was born 50 years too early!

Oh yes, the start search box doesn't work either. I get an error message that "security settings prevent" opening a file even though I disabled all kn Undecidedown security settings. Oh, well.   Undecided

Point of information, the Iris Texan II has thumbnails, a bunch of them.

If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.

That's where I suspect you went wrong. If you typed it manually it would be so easy to make a mistake in the path. I don't have Win7 myself but I believe this is the correct default path to the FSX root directory in Win7 64-bit

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X

To avoid further errors you could run the installer again. When it asks for the path copy it from this reply & paste it in.

Hagar: You called it! While not a typo, my problem installing the Texan lay in my using brackets  --- [ ] -- rather than the correct parenthesis. Just being dumb.  Thanks to all for your help.  Incidentally, I believe Iris is extending its holiday sale. $5 downloads  for aircraft normally costing $35.

I knew we would get there in the end.

If you ever have to reinstall FSX I suggest doing a Custom install outside the default Program Files location. This should prevent a lot of these problems in future. Although I'm still using good old WinXP my own FSX is installed to the simplest path possible - C:\FSX
