After disabling l my Norton anti-virus and windows security, I downloaded a payware aircraft (the Iris Texan) successfully and installed it via the installation wizard. After it installed "successfully" I went on FSX and - no Texan!  I reinstalled, this time adding [x86] to the destination (it is not in the original destination)  but still no aircraft. All this after I had installed another aircraft download with no problems. Can anyone advise on this? Thanks.

You could try creating a new "Texan" folder on your desktop, and then use the install wizard, but install the Texan into the desktop folder, then manually install it.

When you download the file are you running it or saving it? Don't run the file always save first, I made a folder that's simply called the "Hanger". I first save all downloaded aircraft in that folder so I can look thru it to make sure it got what it needs (textures, air.cfg, model, ect.) and if theres anything extra, like special effects, sound and gauges specifically made for that aircraft. If all is well than I will move everything thing to it's proper location, aircraft to the fsx/simobjects/airplane folder, effects to the effects folder and so on. And to tell you the truth, I don't like auto installers because sometimes, like in your situation, the file gets downloaded somewere else and gets lost (did you do a search for it?) , and if you do run into a download that has an auto installer, you can tell it to install into "Your Hanger", so you can check out the contents first as mentioned above, and than put your download aircraft (and any extras) were they belong.

PS, as far as I'm concered any auto installer that won't let you choose the location that you want it to install to, get's trashed!

Hi again. I've tried creating a folder  as you suggested. But don't I need a pathway to type into the installation wizard? What would it be?  As you may deduce, I am extremely ignorant regarding computers but can follow instructions nicely.

Hi, your path may vary slightly depending on your win system, I can only refer to Xp for a def guide: Your path to your desktop is via the 'user name' folder in documents and settings such as:
C:\Documents and Settings\User

Your 'User' part will be whatever you login as on windows.

When your browsing for the install path and your testing it by using the desktop, you should see 'Desktop' as a folder when you click on the + at the side of your 'user name'
You should then see a '+' at the side of Desktop, click on this then select 'Texan' if you created this on your desktop.

As others have said, make sure your in as administrator.

regards
Steve

Most installation wizards have a Browse button. Click on it to browse your system & select the relevant destination directory. If you follow Angusmax's suggestion you can use this to browse to the Hanger folder you created to extract the files to. Then manually install the appropriate folders to your FSX directory.

This is a typical IRIS install wizard showing the Browse button.

Many thanks, chaps. So, if I name the file "Texan", the pathway would be  C:\users\Denis\Texan  ?

If you use the Browse button to select the destination folder you don't need to type anything.

Is there a thumbnail in the texture folder? The aircraft will not show up if there isn't.

"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth and danced the skies on laughter silvered wings. Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun split clouds.....and done a hundred things you have never dreamed of.....wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence. Hovering there, I've chased the shouting wind along and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long, delerious, burning blue I've topped the wind swept heights with easy grace where never Lark, nor even Eagle flew. While with silent lifting of mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of god"

No typing means no typos. Alternatively you could install it direct to FSX using the same method. I suspect your original problem was caused by your FSX being in a different location to usual on Windows 7 64-bit.

Sorry but that's not correct. I've successfully installed lots of FS9 aircraft to FSX. They all work perfectly without thumbnails.

I believe the IRIS Texan is a "true-FSX" aircraft with all the bells & whistles. http://www.irisfss.com/product-pro-t6a.php
