Preliminary Airbus report and pictures.

Anatomy of accident

Bit of a damming statement Shocked
Quote:
One thing needs to be kept firmly in mind. Rolls-Royce the maker of the Trent 900 engine which disintegrated knew about the faults that the current airworthiness directive concerning these engines says are likely to have caused an intense oil fire in a structural cavity in the intermediate pressure turbine area of the engine.

Rolls-Royce had designed and was introducing a fix for the oil leak issues for this into the engines at its own speed. Qantas was left in the dark. It is fair to suggest that Qantas needs to review relationships with engine manufacturers in which it pays for power by-the-hour and leaves much of the maintenance and oversight of those engines to the designer and manufacturer.

Makes you wonder how many RR users are rethinking their supplier at this moment.  Undecided

None I would think. For example, a CFM 56 engine and a V2500 on the Airbus A320 are as interchangeable as the engine in a Ford to a Fiat. Once you have an engine on the wing it is a absolutely huge ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$) task to re-engine. Also, changing the engine  involves a complete rewire to cover all the system changes that are also requires. Even if companies who have ordered the A380 (just as an example), once the production starts, it is too late to change. At that point there is just to much to change.

I bet they aren't the only manufacturer who does; just the one unlucky enough to have been caught out - this time. Smiley

That about sums it up, "caught out". If the average person could see the number of AD's that are issued on a daily basis (cigar tubes in general) they would never ever fly again. Not only that, but the time scale that these have to be worked, a lot of the time, the odds are being played due to time and money constraints.
